The Launch Code – book by Zoltan A Vardy

Disclaimer – We have received this item for free or on a loan basis for the purpose of this review/feature but all words and opinions are our own.

Zoltan Vardy, sales manager for 30+ years, creates his first book about sales, aimed at start-ups and new enterprises who have the product, but lack the sales.

As you begin to read the book though, you realise that it’s not just that they lack the sales, it’s that many start-ups lack the sales know-how. It’s one thing to have a product that is perfect in every way, but that doesn’t guarantee that you will sell it. Zoltan sets the scene for how the sales world works, and it has little to do with a CEO being able to sign huge contracts and more to do with tactics, and especially to do with having a proper sales manager who can create the right sales strategy.

That’s one side of the equation. The other side is that no matter how perfect you think your idea or your product is, there is a knack on how to refine it, or make it more useable across different markets.  Too niche and you alienate a huge part of your market. Too broad and you won’t target anyone and your idea is lost. This is especially true for media companies and apps, which Zoltan goes into depth about. It’s no wonder as there are so many apps out there and it’s relatively easy to write your own.

Zoltan has 3 Pillars which make up The Launch Code which make up the frame of the book.  There’s the Focus, Structure then Scale. Each of the pillars goes into 3 further modules, some of which are more technical than others. This is mainly about Business to Business (B2B) sales and Zoltan peppers his training with experience from his career in media sales.  There aren’t any exercises in the book, which is a shame but it is true to a ‘framework’ book which gives instructions in the form of modules.

I like the book, but it is directed more towards those who are already in the throws of a start-up and have a lot of business acumen. I didn’t think the first 2 chapters taught me much, but the pillars and individual modules are short enough that you can spend time digesting the information.  Some of it is common sense, but as I read I realised that what I think of as common sense (coming from a business background) is new information to some people who probably don’t have that much experience so it’s good to have it written down in front of you.  The emphasis on experience throughout the book is obviously something that hits home with Zoltan who has helped 200+ start-ups who think they know everything. I was blown away from the comment about many businesses thinking that they don’t need a sales manager or a sales strategy, that their CEO can sell the product alone.  Wrong, and this book proves why!

The Launch Code helps cement what you already know in a B2B environment or for a start-up, gives you the reasons why you’re wrong and some sound structural advice on how to further your sales, safely!

Kipling Art Bag

Disclaimer: We received this product free of charge for the purpose of this review and all thoughts and opinions are our own.

Let’s be honest there’s really nothing quite like a lovely handbag to make a woman feel fabulous. It’s so more than just an accessory – the right handbag becomes an extension of who we are. So, when it comes to celebrating the wonderful mums in our lives this Mother’s Day, you simply can’t go wrong with the gift of a new handbag.

I’ve just fallen in love with the Kipling Art bag, a versatile handbag that has the perfect mix of practicality and style. Designed with a relaxed, smart-casual vibe the handbag is light enough to carry all day whilst having plenty space for all the essentials which, if you’re a Mum can mean snacks, tissues, emergency plasters and probably a stray toy or two on top of your own bits and pieces! At 44cm wide, 27cm tall and 20cm wide it will easily accommodate all these – plus more besides and with an adjustable zip and stud fastening corners it’s easy to alter the size or look – making the bag more versatile.

The Art bag has two sets of straps, two shorter handles for when you’re dashing out the door, plus a removable, adjustable 138cm strap which is great for wearing messenger-style across your body when you need to be hands free, like when you’ve a coffee in one hand and a toddler trying to make a break for it with the other. Inside, there are handy pockets for a phone, pens, and purse plus a handy key clip that is a real lifesaver when you’re trying to find your keys with a screaming child in tow.

The design of the bag is simple yet elegant with the Kipling logo embossed on one side and, of course, the adorable little colour-coordinated monkey charm. The wide-opening design is a real bonus, making it easy to reach in and grab whatever I need without any fuss. The spacious main compartment is impressive too, it’s plenty big enough to fit my laptop comfortably or bulkier items like a pair of trainers or a sweatshirt when I’m off to the gym. I’m already planning to use it as my hand luggage for summer trips, and I just know it’ll be perfect for keeping everything organised and within reach. With its combination of style, practicality, and a bit of personality, this bag really does tick all the boxes. Plus, it is very well made so I can see it becoming my go-to for everything from weekend getaways to everyday use.

The Kipling Art bag is available in thirteen colours, from the super versatile Relaxed Grey – a greyish-blue that goes with everything, to bolder choices like Ocean Blue and Ultimate Plum. There are even playful patterns like Holiday Waves and Palmtree Leaves if you want something a little more eyecatching. Yes, at £98 it’s a bit of a treat, but it’s a sound investment and let’s be honest, Mum’s worth it!

Organic Shop Orange Blossom Skincare

Disclaimer: We received these products free of charge for the purpose of this review and all thoughts and opinions are our own.

If you’re searching for a thoughtful gift for Mum that doesn’t cost a fortune, the Orange Blossom skincare range from Organic Shop is definitely worth considering. We’ve been trying out the Orange Blossom Illuminating Day Face Cream (RRP £6.99) and the Orange Blossom Makeup Remover Melting Balm (RRP £6.99), and we’re seriously impressed! Both products are packed with powerful ingredients like Orange Blossom and Vitamin E which help hydrate, brighten, and protect the skin.

Let’s talk about the packaging first. In Spring colours – pink for the day cream and soft mint green for the cleansing balm with images of orange blossom on the labels they have added a splash of springtime cheer to my bathroom shelf!

I’m a big fan of cleansing balms, and I have to say, this oil-based one has really impressed me – especially considering it’s a fraction of the price of my usual brand! It melts makeup away effortlessly, leaving my skin feeling beautifully silky without that uncomfortable tightness you sometimes get from a cleanser . The hydrophilic formula turns into a lovely milky texture when you add water, making it a breeze to rinse off. I like to use a damp flannel to remove it, and it does a brilliant job of deeply cleansing pores and getting rid of the day’s grime.

Enriched with plant-based squalane, it leaves skin soft, smooth, and protected. The subtle floral scent is gorgeous too, making my cleansing routine feel like a little spa treat at home. It’s the perfect way for Mum to unwind at the end of a busy day, and at such a budget-friendly price, it’s hard to resist!

The day cream is lightweight yet intensely hydrating, absorbing beautifully without leaving any greasy residue. Infused with nourishing ingredients, it leaves my skin plump, glowing, and ready to face the day, making it ideal for busy Mums who need a quick but effective skincare routine.

So if you’re looking to spoil your Mum (or even yourself) with a little skincare TLC this Mother’s Day, the Orange Blossom range is a winner. Bright, beautiful, and blissfully budget-friendly—what’s not to love?

Patchwork: A Cosy Game About Making a Quilt

We sat down to play Patchwork expecting a simple tile placement game but found a fun and engaging puzzle of creation. This game has you softly competing with another player to build a quilt with random sized tiles on your own grid. The satisfaction of placing just the right piece to fill a gap… amazing!

In Patchwork, you take turns but not in the conventional manner. The player behind on the time board plays, so if you stay behind your opponent you can take multiple turns in a row. On your turn you will pick from 3 different shaped quilt tiles, all with beautiful patterns. Then move a sweet little sewing machine token to replace the taken token and now your choice of tokens changes, giving each turn a new challenge to get just the right tile, or work with what the fate of the game gives you.

So what’s the catch for placing tiles? Each one costs a certain amount to play and takes you time to add to your quilt, which will have you and your opponent leapfrogging across the time board, staring down the other player as their hand hovers over the piece you want, and looking at that all too expensive piece that would fit perfectly but you don’t have the buttons for!

This game is quick, engaging, and has a cozy feeling as you build your quilt alongside your opponent. Patchwork really nails the pace, simplicity of its rules but gives so much replay value – my wife immediately wanted to play this with her mum when she finished. It is a game for any level of boardgamer.

The one part we found a little dissatisfying was the scoring at the end but this may have been due to our gung ho way of playing! We found the -2 points for blank spaces harsh and it led to one of us getting negative points. I would have it only remove 1 point or -2 per a certain amount of blank spaces to give a bit more of a good feeling at scoring. But we enjoyed the journey of the game and look forward to playing again.

Patchwork is a great game to pick up for a couple or to play while catching up with a friend. It requires just enough attention that you can play, chat, and enjoy! The satisfaction of the quilt you can build and fitting that perfect piece will have you wanting to play again and again to see what form of Patchwork you make next time!

OneBrush Adjustable Hairbrush

Disclaimer – We have received this item for free or on a loan basis for the purpose of this review/feature but all words and opinions are our own.

As hair and beauty products seem to be advancing at an exponential rate recently, there are new gadgets on the market all the time. The OneBrush takes the humble hairbrush and upgrades it to something tailored to what you need it for that day. It’s the world’s only adjustable hairbrush.

If like me, you have several hairbrushes (and combs!) for different reasons, then the OneBrush replaces all of them.  With a dial on the back of the brush face, you can change the firmness of the brush in 7 iterations and anything in between. From ‘Soft’ to ‘Firm’, the dial changes the direction of the bristles on the face so that they have different effects. The brush bristles are plastic (the whole brush is recyclable and already made from recycled plastic) and shaped like aeroplane wings. They’re wider at the base than at the top and they taper towards the end. This gives the advantage of changing the firmness of the brush stroke when the dial is changed, thanks to the direction of the fin. The pattern of the bristles also causes the brush to be firmer or softer as it pulls in different directions.

Yes it sounds technical! However, when you play with the brush and try it against your scalp and hair it feels different so you start to get an idea.  As it’s easy to change the dial each time you use it, you can start with the firmness in one direction for the scalp, then change again as you brush towards the ends.  Likewise, you can change it when you are in the shower and might need a softer brush to run conditioner through your hair, or need a firmer brush for when you have shorter, fly away hair.

It takes a while to get used to the different settings, which is understandable as it’s a whole new concept. I’m not a fan of plastic but it does mean that this brush is more versatile and can be used in the shower, taken on holiday (it’s probably indestructible!) and kept in a handbag if you need to.  I found that the firmer end of the dial was very good at massaging my scalp as well as brushing, which made me wonder if using OneBrush helps with stimulating better hair growth. It’s not just great for getting the right stroke in your hair brushing, but for massaging your pressure points after a long day too. Mum will love it!

Yankee Candle Hello Italy Lemon Gelato and Olive & Cypress Candles

Disclaimer – We have received this item for free or on a loan basis for the purpose of this review/feature but all words and opinions are our own.

Finally, we have the beginnings of summer here in the UK with some beautiful spring weather. With a few weeks left until Mother’s Day, Yankee Candle have brought out some beautiful summer candles in a new range called Hello Italy.

Featuring Mediterranean inspired scents such as Capri Glow, Azure Sky and two fragranced candles sent to us called Lemon Gelato and Olive & Cypress. Can you feel the warm Italian sun already?

The Lemon Gelato Yankee Candle evokes that late morning ice cream from the local gelato where you stroll along the beach or amongst the dusty lanes after breakfast.  The Lemon Gelato starts off as a sweeter scent, with the lemon citrus tones coming afterwards.  The double wick makes it quicker to burn but more even, and the glass jar looks not just pretty but keeps the smoke at bay once you replace the cap and take away the oxygen. The scent of lemon lingers in the room longer than the sweet smell.

The Olive & Cypress Yankee Candle reminds me of waking up with the sun shining and the scent of the countryside.  The woody effect of the cypress tree is the first fragrance to hit but I really like the joint, musky tone of the olive coming through. This is more of an evening scent for me. Something to burn over dinner or after dinner with drinks compared to the sweet Lemon Gelato candle.

Both candles are 368 grams which is the medium size in the Hello Italy range. The other sizes are Signature Jar (567 grams) and Mini at 37 grams.  These medium jars have a burn time of 35-50 hours and you can make them last longer and have a less strong fragrance if you only burn one of the wicks. That’s effectively burning the. Candle for 2-3 hours every evening for 2 weeks! What isn’t there to like for a Mother’s Day gift?

SOS Serum Face & Body Healer

Disclaimer – We have received this item for free or on a loan basis for the purpose of this review/feature but all words and opinions are our own.

For Mums, Grans, students and anyone else who needs an all-in-one and on-the-go healing cream, SOS Serum Face & Body Healer can do it all.  Containing anti-inflammatory wasabi and calming burdock leaf, this gorgeous, floral smelling serum moisturises and protect. The added peppermint and Lauromacrogols help anesthetise the skin, which helps with skin complaints such as dermatitis and eczema.

Even if you don’t have a skin condition, SOS Serum helps soothe every day complains like chapped skin, washing-up hands and acts as a barrier for elbows and knees.  The mild ingredients can be used for so many reasons that it’s great to have on you at times, especially in a handbag or nappy bag!  Great for taking on holiday too, the soft fragrance is useful for wearing at work when your hands are dry or if like me, you sit on calls and need something to moisturise your hands and face in a stuffy office and like to have something other than the basics.

Add this to your medicine cabinet, overnight bag or just have handy in the kitchen and SOS Serum Face & Body Healer becomes a close companion.

Rubis Classic Slant Tweezers

Disclaimer – We have received this item for free or on a loan basis for the purpose of this review/feature but all words and opinions are our own.

Everyone needs tweezers. Yes, that’s what I’ve said! It doesn’t matter how old you are, they’re needed for eye brow shaping, taking splinters out of little fingers or for the dreaded whiskers. Blunt, not meeting tweezers are a pain though and if you’re not used to using a well-made, sharp pair, then you’re missing out.

Rubis make hand crafted tweezers in Switzerland, relying on the eye for the final cut to make sure they work properly.  The stainless-steel material means they have the perfect spring to them and last forever, with very few sharpenings needed. They may seem an expensive extravagance at first, but when you realise how precise they are and how long they last, it’s an investment.

The Rubis Classic Slant Tweezers are ergonomically made to fit a woman’s hands, with a safety clasp on them and in a zip-up folder for safe transportation.  This also keeps the blades safe and stops them from blunting. They are both sharp to a point but also sharp bladed so you can get the right angle against your skin.  I love these for not only travelling (because of how well packaged they are) but for shaping eye brows with the right angle on the blades.

For anyone who wants to update their make-up kit or wants to give them as part of a bigger beauty hamper or gift, the Rubis Classic Slant Tweezers are a must!

Glow For It Lash Growth Serum

Disclaimer – We have received this item for free or on a loan basis for the purpose of this review/feature but all words and opinions are our own.

The Beauty Award Winner 2024, Universal Beauty Awards Silver 2024, Beauty Global Awards Finalist 2024, Get The Gloss Beauty Awards Finalist 2024 – and that’s just in the last year!

Lash Growth Serum was never high on my list until I hit my late 30s and realised that my lashes weren’t as strong as they used to be. Oh well, that’s what happens with age, right? Well it might happen but it doesn’t have to stay that way. Glow For It Lash Growth Serum is a nightly serum that strengthens lashes and makes them look healthier too.  It’s not just for very thin or broken lashes either. Anyone who wants to strengthen lashes and therefore strengthen their look can start using it.  Consistency is key, so even if you don’t think you need lash serum yet, you can still start building up your use to prevent lash loss or strength.

The applicator for Glow For It Lash Growth Serum is a small paint brush, very much like a liquid eye-liner brush. Every night, paint the serum onto your lashes to give a good coating and let it dry for a few minutes before going to bed. Start with the lashes on your top lids and then when you get used to using it, the smaller, finer bottom lashes will be easier to apply to.  Without letting the serum brush off at night (it helps if you sleep on your back!) then the lashes are enhanced. It only takes a few days to start seeing a difference and it looks like you’ve had subtle eye lash additions, but it’s all your own!

I love Lash Growth Serum, it’s the beauty product you didn’t know you needed and now can’t live without.  My lashes are stronger and longer now thanks to the serum and it makes it easier for mascara to go on and stay on.  Mum will love this for Mother’s Day, regardless of whether she wears a lot of make up or not.

COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin All In One Cream

Disclaimer – We have received this item for free or on a loan basis for the purpose of this review/feature but all words and opinions are our own.

Yes, this is the ‘snail slime’ you’ve heard about!   I’ve always wanted to try this, so as part of the Korean Beauty revolution, this was right up my street.  I have ‘normal’ skin nowadays, but I used to have life-changing acne right into my 20s and it invariably left scars.  The only think that diminished the scars was an over-the-counter serum I bought in America about 15 years ago which was not available in the UK and I’ve never seen again anywhere. Why am I telling you this? It’s because the COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin is very similar, hence I was keen to compare!

The Advanced Snail 92 All In One Cream is a cream, not a serum, but it works in a similar way.  It’s not slimy as you might think but the cream contains 92% snail secretion (hence the name) and is what gives the cream the deep, nutritious properties which help the skin. The snail filtrate not only helps nourish scars back to a balanced skin tone, but helps prevent the signs of aging, keeping the skin hydrated.  I’m all for keeping hydrated as well as healing so the Snail 92 All In One Cream sounds like an all-round winner to me!

You can use it as a base to make-up or just as a moisturiser. It doesn’t have SPF so it’s probably best used as a base in the summer time with an SPF on top, but as a night cream or in the winter it’s super rich and absorbs easily.  You don’t need much for your face, and once you work it into your skin I found that my face was slightly red but this subsided quickly.  My skin wasn’t tight like a serum can sometime be, and I was left with an even coverage.  Over time, I am hoping it lessens the scars, but for the meantime, it left my skin hydrated and as a base for make-up and moisturiser.

WONDERBALM

WONDERBALM

Disclaimer – We have received this item for free or on a loan basis for the purpose of this review/feature but all words and opinions are our own.

I had never heard of WONDERBALM before, but this pillar of the Korean beauty industry seems to do it all when it comes to beauty and healthcare, so I was intrigued to find out how well it works and what it can do!

This vegan ‘wonder cure’ is made of olive oil with shea butter, candellia wax, orange peel oil and vegetable oil with added antioxidants and vitamins. The name WONDERBALM presumably came about because this elixir can do almost anything – it can be uses as a moisturiser, salve for first aid on the skin, burns and scrapes and for keeping lips and dry skin soft and protected. It’s also useful as a hand cream and cuticle softener, conditioning hair mask, make up remover (or make up primer) and for after tattoo skin care.

The combination of the wax and the oil. Gives an ultra rich texture. I had to work it into my (dry) hands but what hit me was the lovely orange peel aroma that you don’t get with other products on the market. Just a small amount of WONDERBALM was enough to keep my hands hydrated.  With hair mask ( or conditioner) I used it when my hair was still damp, and sparingly too. You don’t need a lot because it’s so dense but the warmth of your hands turns it softer and I was able to work it into the dryer ends of my hair to give more volume. Over time you can work out how much you need for your hair length and texture, but this is a nice (and fragrant!) way of using the product.

With so many uses, this is a great gift for Mum at Mother’s Day and I can’t help but think that WONDERBALM is a great product to take on holiday for not just the beauty aspect, but as a moisturiser, hair conditioner and all round super product.

Disney Lion King Heatless Hair Curling Set

Disclaimer – We have received this item for free or on a loan basis for the purpose of this review/feature but all words and opinions are our own.

This may look like it’s a set for children with the Disney theme, but adults can use this hair curling kit too!  All over Instagram, there’s demonstrations of how to get curly, yet frizz-free hair from different styling methods.  These heatless hair curlers are probably the easiest, and least damaging of all the methods and you’ve probably seen how some of the influencers have used similar methods to get luscious curls.

The idea is to wrap your hair around each of the bendy curlers and fix them in place either whilst you sleep or whilst your hair is still wet and let it dry. There’s no heat involved (although in time you could blast your hair with a diffuser hair dryer to get a different effect) but as there’s no heat and there’s no small parts, this is great for children to either sleep in or use themselves.  The ribbon secures around the head and then you just undo it and let your hair fall out into curls the next morning.

These heatless hair curlers are also lightweight so can be taken on holiday or camping to give you an easy way of styling your hair with minimal effort.

Plant-Based Luxuriant Serum, Shampoo and Conditioner and Facial Soap

Disclaimer – We have received this item for free or on a loan basis for the purpose of this review/feature but all words and opinions are our own.

There’s an abundance of ingredients available out there nowadays, so anyone needing plant based hair care and beauty products has a lot of choice.  Luxuriant has a range of hair care including shampoo, conditioner and serum which is not only plant based, but actively works to increase the thickness of your hair and combat hair thinning.  Many of the harsh chemicals on the market aren’t great for your overall health and equally, aren’t great for the planet and marine life either.

Luxuriant’s products are gentler, using highly effective ingredients but all derived from plant life. Their Hair Nutrient Shampoo contains Litsea Glutinosa to nourish follicles, Houttuynia to combat dandruff, and Ginger to boost circulation.  Their Hair Nutrient Conditioner also contains ginger and other products to boost circulation, and as you can imagine, both smell amazing too! We were sent the Hair Growth Serum too which complete the trio for all you need to keep your hair in top condition and promoting growth.

These are fabulously smelling shampoo and conditioners which take several months to show a huge improvement when you use them regularly, but in the short term they are great as everyday shampoo and conditioner.  The serum is also lovely because it gives a lovely feel to the hair with only a small amount.   After a few washes, you can feel an improvement in texture and the aroma is wonderful.  I’m looking forward to seeing how the long term hair growth goes.

We also had the lovely facial soap sent to us which includes some of the same herbs as the haircare, but you’ll be pleased to know that doesn’t promote any hair thickening!

Digital gift card Prezzee

Disclaimer – We have received this item for free or on a loan basis for the purpose of this review/feature but all words and opinions are our own.

The ultimate gift-hack is the gift card, although nowadays there is a more sophisticated and personalised way of giving Mum that perfect gift!  No longer do we have all the paper gift vouchers which get stuck in a drawer forever, but the Prezzee Digital Gift Card can be sent to someone (or you can print it out) and then converted into any gift card featured on the Prezzee website.

Starting at the Prezzee website (www.prezzee.uk) you choose the amount you wish to gift and who you want to send it to. You can choose to send it with an eGift design, greeting card, GIF or video or send a personalised message – or all three! Once you add the details of who to send it to and pay, the gift card wings its way to the recipient either straight away, or on a given date. Perhaps you’ve forgotten to send Mum a Mother’s Day present? Well she won’t know you’ve forgotten if you still send it on the day!

When Mum receives the eGift, she clicks on the link, creates a Prezzee card and can choose which store to redeem the amount at.  You can even split the amount so the whole value isn’t assigned to just one shop, it can be used in different shops, so you can be sure Mum will be able to use it where she likes, when she likes.

They’re all great stores too, such as Marks and Spencer, John Lewis, Pure Spa, City Breaks and even Swarovski.  We chose to buy some chocolates at M&S, which produces a gift voucher which you can print out and use, or I had it sent to my phone and the barcode is read at the self-serve till.

If you’re all clubbing together to get Mum a big gift, creating digital eGift cards with Prezzee means Mum can redeem them all in one go at her favourite store, or even use it for a weekend away.  So simple compared to the old-fashioned paper gift vouchers of years gone by. Everyone wins!

The Three Fishes, Mitton

Disclaimer: This meal was gifted to the reviewer for the purpose of this review and all thoughts and opinions are their own.

Tucked away in the charming hamlet of Mitton, right in the heart of the Ribble Valley lies The Three Fishes, a fabulous foodie heaven led by renowned chef Nigel Haworth. With a real passion for local produce and proper, traditional flavours, this place is all about that farm-to-fork goodness. It had been a long time since our last visit and after browsing the enticing menu online we couldn’t wait to tuck into what promised to be a truly special dining experience.

Nigel’s dedication to locally sourced ingredients is evident in every aspect of the menu, with many seasonal elements harvested directly from the restaurant’s kitchen garden or carefully selected from trusted local suppliers. This commitment ensures that each dish is served at peak freshness, resulting in bold, well-balanced flavours that truly shine. From the finest local producers to the restaurant’s own kitchen garden, every ingredient is chosen with care, and the attention to detail elevates even the simplest of dishes. The menu proudly showcases regional treasures like Mrs. Kirkham’s cheese and Morecambe Bay lobster, celebrating the authentic flavours of Lancashire’s rich culinary heritage.

The menu changes with the seasons, meaning there is always something new to discover. On this occasion, we ate from the Farm-to-Fork Tasting Menu, a carefully curated five-course journey through the best that the local land and sea have to offer. Despite it being a midweek evening, the restaurant maintained a lively yet intimate atmosphere, with just the right level of bustle to create a sense of occasion. Service was impeccable, with the knowledgeable staff providing detailed explanations of each dish and offering personal recommendations, particularly when it came to accompaniments for the pheasant. Small but significant touches—such as a waitress noticing our water needed replenishing without being asked demonstrated a level of attentiveness that is all too rare.

The meal commenced with Nigel’s Lancashire Cheese Bread Rolls, made with the renowned Mrs. Kirkham’s Lancashire Cheese. These warm, pillowy rolls were accompanied by a savoury black pea hummus and a bright, herbaceous parsley pesto, an inspired combination of flavors and textures that set the tone for the meal ahead.

Next came the Baked Wilja Potato, sourced from a local farm and presented with samphire butter, fennel coleslaw, and puffed rice. The contrast of crispy, golden skin against the fluffy interior, drenched in rich butter, was simply divine. It was a masterclass in how to elevate a humble ingredient to something truly memorable.

Now, if I had to pick a standout moment from the evening, it would have to be the Morecambe Bay Lobster Soup. A properly well-executed dish, it had a rich, deep-sea flavour that was further enhanced by a bit of cream and a very sensible amount of chili, just enough to make itself known without being overpowering. The addition of sticky rice, along with decent-sized chunks of lobster and haddock, provided a pleasing contrast in texture. Each spoonful was a rather excellent balance of spice and creaminess, and I must say, this is one of those dishes that stays with you – in a good way, of course.

The Ribble Valley Pheasant Breast arrived as a golden-brown schnitzel, fried in pheasant fat for extra depth of flavour, and served with a fragrant herb butter and a spiced crumb. We opted for the super thick chips and cauliflower as accompaniments, though the unexpected highlight was a delightful serving of pheasant shepherd’s pie. Nigel’s philosophy of using every part of the bird resulted in a deeply satisfying dish, succulent minced pheasant with a sweet, moreish flavour, topped with a cloud-like layer of mashed potato.

For dessert, the Foragers Souffle, a delicate apple and bramble souffle was an absolute triumph. Light and fluffy it melted on the tongue and was served alongside a delicious, brown bread ice cream and crunchy croutons, providing a medley of textures that made each mouthful an absolute pleasure. Just when we thought we had finished, a final surprise arrived: a small Eccles cake, its crisp, flaky pastry encasing plump, juicy currants, providing a perfectly sweet ending to an exceptional meal.

Dining at The Three Fishes is a masterclass in how to celebrate local produce with skill, creativity, and a deep respect for the land. Nigel Haworth has created more than just a restaurant, he has crafted an experience that is both comforting and exciting, traditional yet innovative. This is farm-to-fork dining at its finest, and it’s one I’ll be eager to return to again.

Platzki, Manchester

Disclaimer: We received a meal and drinks free of charge for the purpose of this review and all thoughts and opinions are our own

Right in the heart of Deansgate, one of Manchester’s most vibrant stretches, sits a Polish restaurant called Platzki. Arriving on a bitterly cold Sunday lunchtime, we were greeted with warmth, both from the staff and the restaurant’s inviting atmosphere. The industrial-chic design was softened beautifully with plenty of greenery and fresh flowers, creating the perfect balance between contemporary and cosy and is just the kind of place you want to settle into for a long, leisurely meal.

From the moment we arrived, the service was nothing short of exceptional. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about the food they were serving. They guided us through the menu with genuine enthusiasm, offering thoughtful recommendations and ensuring that we felt comfortable navigating the array of traditional Polish dishes. Their attentiveness was perfectly balanced, not too overbearing, yet always available when needed, making what could potentially have been an intimidating experience an enjoyable exploration of Polish cuisine. The drinks menu featured an extensive range of cocktails and Polish wines and not being wine experts we followed our waiter’s recommendation and opted for a Polish chardonnay. Light, crisp, and refreshing, it was a perfect match for the meal.

As we awaited our starters, we were offered some Smalec, a traditional Polish rustic spread made from rendered pork fat and served with sourdough bread and pickles. Rich and surprisingly tasty it was balanced beautifully by the sharpness of the pickle giving us a tasty snippet of the Polish treats to come.

Eager to sample a variety of flavours, we opted to share two highly recommended starters. The Pierogi, delicate dumplings filled with velvety cottage cheese and topped with crispy fried onions, were wonderfully soft, satisfying and full of flavour. Meanwhile the Tatar, a hand-chopped, 21-day aged beef fillet tartare, was nothing short of exceptional. Whilst I enjoy a rare steak, eating raw meat was a step into the unknown but the tartare didn’t disappoint. The finely balanced flavours of mustard, spring onion and pickles elevated the dish, making it a real highlight of our meal.

For the main course, we opted for a classic Polish dish – Bigos, a traditional hunter’s stew made with sauerkraut, beef, pork neck, Polish sausage, mushrooms, and a hint of red wine. The stew was robust, rich in tomato and onion flavours, and incredibly hearty. Served with sourdough bread, it was a deeply satisfying dish that showcased the heartwarming nature of Polish cuisine and was just what we needed on a chilly February day.

Our second main was Szaszlyk, a lighter but just as satisfying dish. The grilled chicken thigh skewers had been marinated in kefir, paprika, and thyme and were served with roasted baby potatoes and a creamy dip. The chicken was lovely and tender and packed with flavour and the accompanying pickles, salad and dip complemented the dish wonderfully.

To accompany our mains, we opted for two classic Polish side dishes. The Buraczki, a vibrant beetroot dish mixed with walnuts and mayo which offered an earthy sweetness that paired perfectly with the chicken. The Sauerkraut, mixed with carrot, apple, and onion, was a surprising delight. Having previously found sauerkraut underwhelming, this version was bursting with flavour and was incredibly moreish.

No meal is complete without a sweet finale and as we were both quite full we opted to share a baked cheesecake. Served warm, the creamy texture and subtle sweetness made it the perfect ending to our meal, especially when paired with the homemade chocolate hearts that accompanied it.

This visit marked our first foray into Polish cuisine and it certainly won’t be our last. The combination of a welcoming atmosphere, knowledgeable staff, and outstanding food made for a memorable experience. Whether you’re already a fan of Polish cuisine or looking to try something new, Platzki on Deansgate is well worth a visit – we’ll certainly be back soon.

Woodwick Candles

Disclaimer: We received these products free of charge for the purpose of this review, but as always, all thoughts and opinions are our own!

I love candles, my house is filled with them, and I can’t resist the candle section in shops, spending ages sniffing every single one before convincing myself that I absolutely need another one (or three!) Over the years I have discovered that it is worth spending money on decent candles, if you don’t, you may be disappointed as candles do tend to vary from brand to brand. Some barely give off any scent, while others burn unevenly and leave you feeling totally disappointed. That’s why, once you find a good brand, you stick with it – and for me, that brand is Woodwick.

Now, I’m a firm believer that a candle isn’t just about the scent – it’s about the whole experience. It needs to look stylish in your home, set the mood, and actually make an impact. And trust me, Woodwick candles tick all those boxes. Not only do they look fabulous, but the fragrances are divine and last. Plus, they have that signature Pluswick® Innovation wooden wick that crackles like a real fire making the room feel nice and cosy when they’re lit.

I like to change scents depending on the time of year and my current favourites are from Woodwick’s Haze range – Terra Haze and Solar Haze.

Terra Haze is a gorgeous grey candle with a deep, earthy fragrance that reminds me of that fresh smell after rain – you know the one? It’s got hints of cedarwood and moss, and it just makes everything feel warm and inviting. Perfect for those chilled-out evenings with a cup of tea (or a glass of something stronger!).

Then there’s Solar Haze, which is completely different but equally gorgeous. This one is all about fresh, uplifting citrus – think grapefruit, lychee, and a burst of morning sunshine in candle form. It’s fresh, zingy, and ideal for brightening up your mood and your home.

The best bit? These candles are designed to burn evenly, so you don’t get that annoying wax tunnel, and the scent actually lingers – I can still smell it in my living room the following morning! Plus, the jars are so pretty that once the candle’s finished, you can upcycle them into a vase.

And here’s a little hint hint for anyone struggling for a Mother’s Day gift – because let’s be honest, what mum wouldn’t love a luxurious candle? Whether she’s into relaxing, refreshing, or just making her home smell amazing, a Woodwick candle is a guaranteed winner. It’s like gifting an entire vibe – and at £32.99, it’s a little touch of indulgence that she’ll love.

So, if you want to create a cosy, welcoming feel in your home (or treat someone special), these candles are an absolute must-have. Light it, sit back, and let the gorgeous scent do the rest!

Sherpa Mayalu Roll-On Bracelet

Disclaimer – We have received this item for free or on a loan basis for the purpose of this review/feature but all words and opinions are our own.

Sometimes it’s not the cost that’s important but the gift, and this hand made bracelet from Sherpa is just the charm.

Handcrafted in Nepal, the enterprise gives work to women who would ordinarily not be able to work outside the home. It features an Endless Knot, known in the Nepalese culture to symbolise Buddha’s infinite wisdom and compassion.  The bracelet itself is a roll-over meaning there are no fastenings to undo, snag on clothing or for small children to play with as it just glides over the wrist to wear.

The tiny two-coloured beads create a pattern using eco-friendly materials and come in three other colours (brown, black and yellow) too. They’re only one size though, which is big enough for an adult wrist with a bit of wriggling but a teenager will love this just as much especially with the chunky texture and inability for it to fall off the wrist with loose fastenings!

An added bonus for Mother’s Day; for every bracelet bought, Sherpa Adventure Gear donates a school day in Nepal, so you’re investing in the future generations too.

Disclaimer: We received these products free of charge for the purpose of this review, but as always, all thoughts and opinions are our own!

Let’s talk about SMUG –  the brand that’s making self-care simple and luxurious at the same time. Founded by Kelli, SMUG is all about helping us get a better night’s sleep and feel pampered every day. They recently sent us some goodies to try and we’re all now well and truly obsessed with their products!

Satin & Contoured Sleep Masks (RRP from £10)

A good sleep mask is an absolute beauty essential and SMUG have plenty to choose from. I tried both the Satin Sleep Mask and the Contoured 3D Blackout Sleep Mask, and while both are dreamy, the contoured one is my favourite because it sits so comfortably and stays put. Plus, there are loads of cute designs so there’s bound to be one that matches your pyjamas! They also come in resealable pouches, making them ideal for travel.

The masks are beautifully soft and smooth and have an elasticated strap which was very comfortable to wear. They cover my eyes really well and don’t let any light in around the edges. I found them both very comfortable to wear in bed and slept really well with them on.

Quick Dry Satin Hair Turban (RRP £16)

If you’ve got curly hair, this will be your new best friend! It’s double-sided, with a microfibre layer for drying hair and a satin side to protect your curls overnight. My usual ‘pineapple’ bedtime hairstyle has been replaced by this turban, and the difference is incredible, no more waking up to a frizz explosion and it’s much easier to refresh my hair in the morning as the curls are less crushed. Being double sided is a real bonus and is great for travelling, keeping hair sleek and smooth on the go.

Makeup & Beauty Accessories Bag (RRP £10) & Wash Bag (£16)

We love a good makeup bag at the Review Studio and the team absolutely adore the SMUG bags. Not only are they stylish, but they’re also incredibly practical, making them a must-have for beauty lovers and frequent travellers alike. The zipped beauty bag is the perfect size for keeping all your essentials in one place, from toiletries and makeup to those easy-to-lose items like lip balm and hair bobbles. It’s also a great addition to any handbag, keeping charging cables, headphones, and other small gadgets neatly stored, instead of tangled at the bottom of your bag. The waterproof wash bag is even roomier and perfect for travel, the gym, or just keeping your bathroom tidy. It comes in a range of fun and eye-catching prints, we’re obsessed with the avocado design, but there’s also a super cute duck print and a stylish green camo option that we love too. Whether you need a compact beauty pouch for daily touch-ups or a spacious bag for travel, these SMUG bags have got you covered.

The beads slowly diffuse the scent throughout the day – just apply a few drops of the essential oil provided to the black lava stones, and you’re good to go! Plus, it looks just like a stylish beaded bracelet, so it’s a win-win.

Overall, SMUG has well and truly won us over. Whether you’re looking for better sleep, gorgeous hair, or a little spa moment at home, their range has something for everyone. We’ll definitely be keeping these self-care essentials in our routine!

The Ivy Restaurant, West Street, WC2 London

NOT SPONSORED

The outside appearance of The Ivy is deceptive when you consider that the restaurant is wedge shaped and on both Litchfield Street and West Street, where the entrance is, in London’s Theatre Land.  The distinctive Ivy Windows which have become their branding, can be seen clearly from both streets as you approach and are directly opposite St Martin’s Theatre where The Mousetrap by Agatha Christie has been playing for more than 70 years.

Inside, the bar dominates the centre of the restaurant which isn’t as expansive as you might have thought. The tables arrange around the bar and towards the back of the room but there are more private rooms out of view – a necessity for the celebrities who frequently choose The Ivy for entertaining.  If you walk off the street and ask for a table you’re unlikely to find one, but there’s a slim chance that you’ll get a seat at the bar to eat, which is the same menu as everyone else.

Opening in 1917 for the first time, when Europe was at war and there were very few people in London, The Ivy has in the past decade branched out and opened several Ivy Brasseries around the country. All of them have the stained glass window branding and this original West Street site is ne exception, even after renovation.  What’s striking is the attention to detail such as the ivy cut outs on the bar’s drip tray, the artwork which reflects the bold colours of the (obscured) windows and the managers who wear an Ivy brooch to show their responsibility.

The menu is classic and the portions plentiful.  From Veal cheeks bourgouignon to the Ivy Classics of The Ivy Burger and Deep-fried haddock and chips, there is something for everyone.  The menu at West Street is similar to what you find in the brasseries but with added temptations and some specials you won’t find anywhere else such as Beef Wellington for 2. We also liked the dessert menu, which has staples such as Tiramisu and a selection of cheeses, but with The Ivy’s famous Chocolate Bombe which is a theatre experience in itself when the staff pour hot caramel over the chocolate bombe to reveal ice cream underneath. Not for the fainthearted, it’s worth saving room on the mains for this delicious, decadent treat that The Ivy does so well.

The bar creates a wealth of cocktails, some of which are house specialties going back decades, as well as the usual long selection of spirits. The Ivy is famous for their Martinis though, and the bar staff will happily advise along which Martini route you wish to indulge.  Another suggestion would be their Peach Bellini, the Prosecco based tipple which is often enjoyed at breakfast but goes exceptionally well with lunch as well.

The atmosphere is bustling and warm within The Ivy with nearly every seat at every table able to see who walks in the door.  From the outside, it’s impossible to see who is seated inside so you have to venture in through the wood and glass Art Deco doors, past the huge vases of fresh flowers and to the hosts on the main desk to see if they have a table, or a bar stool for you.  The food is the star of the restaurant though, with sumptuous presentations of classic dishes and something different for anyone looking for a change.

Scented Aromas

Disclaimer: We received these products free of charge for the purpose of this review and all thoughts and opinions are our own.

When mother and daughter duo Amanda and Lizzie struggled with psoriasis and other skin concerns, they took matters into their own hands and Scented Aromas was born. The Manchester based brand has gone from strength to strength creating luxurious, handmade bath and home products that are gentle on the skin – without the luxury price tag.

I’ve suffered from eczema for many years so I have to be very careful with what I use on my skin, so when a lovely package of Scented Aromas goodies arrived, I was really  excited and after trying them I’m now hooked!!

Flowerbomb Bath Bomb (£3.95)

There’s something wonderfully indulgent about a long soak in the bath, and the Flowerbomb bath bomb makes bath time feel even more special. A pristine white bath bomb with silver detailing and a hint of shimmer, it looked almost too lovely to use – but I’m so glad I did! As soon as it hit the water, it fizzed away, releasing the most gorgeous scent – a warm, comforting blend of jasmine sambac, cashmere, and white amber. The fragrance quickly filled the bathroom, while the water turned soft and silky. It made for such a relaxing bath, and unlike other bath bombs I’ve used, there was no residue or staining left behind – just a lingering sense of calm.

If you love a bit of self-care, the Flowerbomb bath bomb is an absolute treat and the perfect way to bring a little spa-like luxury to your routine.

Exfoliating Soap Sponge (£6.50)

If you haven’t tried an exfoliating soap sponge yet, you’re in for a treat. This clever product combines a body scrub and soap making exfoliating effortless. Whether you’re tackling dry patches, prepping for fake tan, or just want ultra-smooth skin, this does the job effortlessly. The texture is just right, not too rough and not too soft, so you get a satisfying scrub without any irritation, leaving your skin beautifully smooth.

Scented Aromas offers an impressive range of scents, from fresh citrus to floral, and even a fun “Monkey Fart” scent ( a fruity mix of pear, plum, peach, and apple)  With its dual-sided design, it cleanses and exfoliates beautifully, and used daily will last up to four weeks.

After just one use, my skin felt noticeably softer and it’s the perfect addition to any shower routine, giving that extra boost of radiance without any extra effort. Trust me – once you’ve tried one, you won’t go back.

Soy Wax Melts (£3.29)

For those who love a beautifully scented home, wax melts are the way to go. These little melts pack a real punch, melting into long-lasting fragrances that fill every corner of your space.

The Cherry Blossom & Nordic Cotton blend is fresh yet soothing, bringing an instant cosy feel to your home. Whether you’re in the mood for a fruity, floral or even something a bit different like Scented Aroma’s Alien Encounter, there’s a scent for every occasion.Plus, with each segment lasting up to 18 hours, they’re great value for money too.

Whipped Soap 200g (£7.99)

This whipped soap is pure luxury in a jar. Light, fluffy, and silky smooth, it lathers easily and leaves skin feeling soft and nourished. It’s also multi-purpose and can be used as a body wash or shaving cream.

A little goes a long way, and it’s gentle enough for all skin types. Whether you prefer fruity, floral, or sweet, there’s something for everyone. We received a sample pot to try but the full sized version is 200g

These Scented Aromas products bring spa-like indulgence into your everyday routine, proving that luxury and affordability can go hand in hand. Whether it’s a relaxing bath, smooth skin, or a beautifully fragranced home, they’ve got you covered.

Purple Coffee Bags

Disclaimer – We have received this item for free or on a loan basis for the purpose of this review/feature but all words and opinions are our own.

The invention of the coffee bag has been a lifesaver for a lot of people, especially those who don’t enjoy instant coffee but need the convenience.  Purple Coffee produce coffee in all shapes and sizes from whole bean, ground, pods and some rather lovely (and colourful!) coffee bags.  We were sent some in a very fetching Purple Coffee tin to try out as part of their new Brew Monday launch for Mental Health Awareness Day on Monday 20th January.

The 16 bags of coffee (probably enough for a whole month in the office or a weeks’ worth at home!) can be found on their website Purple Coffee Co which aims to promote ‘real’ coffee instead of instant. Additionally, Purple Coffee want to help keep down the costs of coffee by providing bags that are less than 50% of the cost of a coffee in a coffee shop and promotes initiatives for young talent and a sustainable agroforestry project in Costa Rica, which obviously is where a lot of coffee is grown.

The coffee bags come in 4 flavours; KO (fully roasted bean, great for mornings), XO (a ‘zingy finisher’), BI (50/50 caffeinated/decaffeinated fuller flavour) and ZZ (chill decaf, for relaxation).  Each 20 gram bag produces at least one cup and all of the flavours go great with milk.  I think my favourite is the KO as I like the full on, coffee and caffeinated morning cup of java but just as nice is the fact that each tin has a variety of flavours so that you can mix and match throughout the day.

The Purple Coffee Co tin also makes a great gift for someone, especially someone who appreciates coffee!

Purple Coffee Co Tasting Tin £15.99 available here: https://purplecoffeeco.com/collections/shop/products/purple-coffee-bag-tin

Hyatt Hotels, Manchester

Disclaimer: We received a free stay and meal for the purpose of this review and all thoughts and opinions are our own.

Manchester has always held a special place in my heart. My husband spent his university years there, and I visited often, falling in love with the city’s energy and charm. Returning after so many years and exploring our old haunts, we couldn’t help but marvel at how much Manchester has evolved whilst the warmth and friendliness that define the North remain beautifully intact.

This time, our base wasn’t the humble student digs of our youth but the splendid 4 star Hyatt Hotel Manchester, tucked just behind the home to Manchester’s universities – Oxford Road. The hotel offers two hotels under one roof, the Hyatt Regency with 212 rooms, and Hyatt House, a 116-room aparthotel making it the ideal base for a city break. One challenge we often encounter when visiting cities is finding convenient car parking but thankfully, this wasn’t an issue during our stay, as the hotel is perfectly located next to the secure university car park, providing 24-hour parking for £16.50. For those arriving by train, it’s also conveniently located, a 10-minute walk from Manchester Oxford Road Station or a 20-minute stroll from Manchester Piccadilly.

Opening the door to our room, we were greeted by a spacious room that struck the perfect balance between modern design and comfort. A king-sized bed occupied pride of place and there was also a comfortable chair and sleek, modern desk, perfectly suited for guests visiting the city on business. The pièce de résistance, however, was undoubtedly the floor-to-ceiling windows, offering a stunning view of Manchester at night, with the city’s twinkling lights creating a striking contrast against the dark sky.

The room was spotlessly clean and furnished with everything you might need for a restful retreat. It was tastefully decorated in neutral tones and contemporary textures that whispered rather than shouted sophistication. The spacious bathroom was a pleasant surprise, featuring both a generous shower and a bath, along with luxury toiletries. It was the perfect retreat for unwinding after a day of exploring the city.

The central location is perfect for exploring Manchester, with Oxford Road’s Dutch-style cycle lanes making it a cyclist’s dream and with city bike’s to hire nearby there’s no need to bring your own. For those seeking adventure, the Fallowfield Loop, Britain’s longest urban cycleway, provides a largely traffic-free track for walking or cycling, following the path of a former railway line. Though we plan to return and explore this scenic route on two wheels, our short visit called for a gentler approach and we opted for a leisurely stroll. As we wandered, the streets conjured memories of nightclub queues, post-pub kebabs, and the carefree energy of youth. While Manchester has transformed in many ways, its vibrancy and unmistakable spirit remain as captivating as ever – a city that embraces its evolution while honouring its past.

Back at the hotel, we ate at The Laureate Restaurant with the à la carte menu offering an array of choices at reasonable prices. We began with Calamari Ringsand ChickenWings, the calamari was tender, encased in a light, crispy coating, while the chicken wings had just the right level of spice and succulence to keep us reaching for more. For our main courses, we indulged in two favourites: a richly spiced Chicken Tikka Masala and a beautifully golden Fish and Chips, coated in crispy batter and served with chunky chips and mushy peas. Each dish was perfect and was satisfying without being overwhelming. Despite feeling pleasantly full, we couldn’t resist a dessert. My Lemon Tart was a zesty delight with the raspberry sorbet perfectly complementing the tart. The cheeseboard offered a selection of fine cheeses and rounded off the meal beautifully.

For guests who prefer the comfort of dining in their room, the In-Room Dining Menu offers a  variety of options, available from 10:30 AM to 11:00 PM. The menu includes starters, mains, pizzas, and side dishes, alongside a couple of indulgent treats – a cheeseboard and ice cream. There is a charge of £5 for delivery.

Whilst not for me, fitness enthusiasts will find the onsite gym a dream, equipped with Peloton® bikes, treadmills, weights, and more. A perfect way to offset the fine dining and no excuse to miss a gym session whilst away from home!

The following morning, breakfast was nothing short of a feast catering for all tastes and appetites. For those who prefer a lighter start to their day there were cheeses and cold meats, cereals and a wide selection of fruits plus juices and yoghurt. When I’m on holiday I like to indulge in a cooked breakfast so the help-yourself buffet was just what I needed with eggs cooked to perfection, sizzling sausages and delcious bacon as well as other traditional favourites, all washed down with freshly brewed coffee. Had I wanted something that was not on offer, the chef was on hand to create dishes on request.

We really enjoyed our night at the Hyatt Regency Manchester, from the warm welcome we received to the wonderful food and the location which was the perfect base to rediscover Manchester, and we’ve promised ourselves we won’t let so much time pass before our next visit.
