Yankee Candle Glistening Leaves Signature Large Jar Candle

Now that the evenings are drawing in and there’s a distinct nip in the air, I love to curl up in front of the fire with a good book and a few candles flickering around the room to create a cosy, relaxing atmosphere. At weekends I like to have one burning in the hallway so when friends or family arrive, they’re greeted with a beautiful scent as they step through the door.

Looking out of my window right now, the garden’s covered in a carpet of golden leaves so it’s only right that my candle of choice at the moment is the Yankee Candle Glistening Leaves. Available in four different sizes, Signature Large Jar, Signature Medium Jar, Signature Small Tumbler and the Yankee Candle Mini, there’s one to suit every space and style. The fragrance smells nice and autumnal with fresh top notes of grapefruit, eucalyptus, and Meyer lemon, middle notes of rose, jasmine, and oakmoss followed by the warm, comforting base of amber, patchouli, and vanilla. The scent is fresh and earthy and reminds me of crisp autumn days.

As the candle burns, the beautiful scent fills my living room, lingering long after the candle has been blown out. The jar comes with a lid, making it easy to extinguish, simply place it back on top to gently snuff out the flame and keep the fragrance contained. The two wicks ensure an even burn and with an impressive burn time of 65–80 hours I can see it lasting right through to December, just in time to switch to one a little more festive!

I also love that once the wax has melted away, the labels peel off easily (no sticky residue in sight), leaving a beautiful glass jar that’s ideal for storing makeup brushes, cotton pads, or even a string of fairy lights to get you in a festive mood.

The Catch Me If You Can Bath Bomb is shaped like a cheeky little gingerbread man and  fizzed away beautifully in the bath filling the room with a lovely  Christmassy scent. The yellow and blue swirls created gorgeous golden patterns in the water before turning the water a very bright green – think the colour of Grotbags face (if you’re old enough to remember her – google her if you’re not!!) whilst the zesty lime and sweet wild orange oils smelt divine and were perfect for helping me relax after a busy day. The illipe butter and extra virgin olive oil in the bath bomb helped leave my skin feeling soft and nourished.

Next up, the Yog Nog Shower Gel and wow, this one’s a Christmas dream. It’s glittery, golden, and smells like sweet, spiced caramel. LUSH shower gels always turn a quick shower into a mini pamper session, and this limited-edition scent might just give my all-time favourite, Snow Fairy, a run for its money!

The Humbug Scrubee Body Scrub is shaped like a cute little bug and is packed with ground almonds and coconut shell for a gentle exfoliation. It also contains hydrating butters and pomegranate molasses which melted into my skin, leaving it lovely and soft. It has a double dose of peppermint and spearmint oils which gives a fresh, tingly feeling which has been perfect for waking me up now the dark winter mornings are here.

If I have to pick a favourite product from the box it has to be the Yule Log Soap. As a self-confessed chocoholic, this one was always going to win me over. It looks just like a slice of Yule log and even smells chocolatey. Made with maple syrup, cocoa butter, and macadamia nut oil, it gives a creamy lather that not only cleans my skin but soothes and hydrates it too. It looks and smells good enough to eat, though best to stick to admiring it every time you wash your hands!

Swizzel Sweets for Halloween

There aren’t many times in the year when you can legitimately purchase a huge box of sweets like the Swizzel Sweet Shop Favourites, but Halloween is one of them!  Swizzels have all you need for Halloween Trick Or Treating, and they sent us a huge selection of what’s on offer. Did we sample them? Yes we did. Did we get fed up of so many tubs, pouches and boxes of sweets? No, not yet!

The tub is the largest of the packets in the range at 650 grams. This also doubles up nicely as the bowl that you dish out the sweets from, so we’re going to use this to start with and then fill it up with the rest of the packets! The box is probably the next easiest to use on Halloween and is 324 grams. The pouch is great for filling up your bowl and is 375 grams net.

Tolpa Dermo Face Rosacal Products

Tolpa is a Polish skincare brand and it’s now available at Boots. I’ve already used the Lipidrio range and now I’ve trying a couple of products from the Rosacal range, designed for those with sensitive skin.

The Strengthening Regenerating Cream (RRP £12.99) is a real multitasking night cream, it promises to do more than just moisturise, also helping to strengthen and seals blood vessels, making them less sensitive to external factors. It also claims to soothe erythema, calm irritation and even conceal redness thanks to its natural green colouring. On top of that it helps tackle fine lines and wrinkles. That’s quite a list of promises but with my skin in need of some extra TLC, I was hoping that it would make a difference.

The texture is lovely, it sinks in easily without that heavy, greasy feeling some night creams can leave behind. When I wake up, my skin feels soft, calm and properly hydrated. According to Tolpa’s own tests, the cream can reduce persistent redness by 10% after four weeks, even out skin tone and lessen the appearance of spider veins. Hydration levels also jump by 29% after the very first use and last a full 24 hours. After a month I’m pleased to say that my skin is looking much better, it feels plump and hydrated and I’m starting to see a small improvement in my fine lines too.

One thing I really like is the packaging. The cream comes in an aluminium tube, which not only helps keep the product fresher but is also better for the environment. Plus, it’s more hygienic than a jar – no dipping fingers in and spreading bacteria!

I’ve also been using the Rosacal Strengthening Face and Eye Area Micellar Wash Gel (RRP £8.99), which has slotted perfectly into my morning and evening routine. I massage it in gently and rinse with water, finishing with a damp flannel. It’s gentle enough for sensitive skin but still effective – it removes light makeup easily, though I do reach for a stronger cleanser if I’ve gone heavier on the foundation. My skin feels clean, refreshed and never tight or dry afterwards.

Boux Avenue recently sent me a pair of their Christmas pyjamas, the Boux Avenue Bow Check Cotton Pyjamas in a bag – Red mix which have quickly become a bedtime favourite.

Let’s start with the fabric, made from brushed cotton (99% cotton and 1% metallised fibre) they feel wonderfully soft and cosy when you put them on. The fabric is also very durable, making them perfect for both lounging about and sleeping in.  

Now, onto the design – the red bow check pattern is the perfect blend of classic and chic with a distinctly Christmassy twist. The little white bows scattered across the red check background add just the right amount of festive charm but not so much that you couldn’t wear them all year round. I know it’s only October, but it’s the perfect time to get started on your Christmas shopping. The shops are beginning to fill with festive gifts, and by picking up a few now, you won’t be rushing around at the last minute. We’ve been trying out some brilliant beauty treats this week that are perfect as stocking fillers or Secret Santa gifts – little luxuries that are bound to be well received on Christmas morning.

First up, the Rubis Tweezers – in my opinion these are the holy grail of tweezers and perfect for anyone who likes to keep their brows neat and tidy in between salon visits. Lightweight but surprisingly sturdy, they’re well made with an ergonomic design that makes them very comfortable to hold. Each pair is hand-finished in Switzerland from surgical stainless steel and they pluck even the finest hairs easily, with no pinching or snapping. They come in a neat zip-lock pouch (no more rummaging through your make-up bag) and even have a protective cap to keep the tips in perfect condition. If you’re shopping for someone with curls then you really need to look at Curlsmith products.  The Shake & Shine Curls Refreshing Mist (£24) is my go to product for refreshing my curls – a few spritzes of the lightweight mist and a quick scrunch and tired curls spring back to life looking bouncy and defined again. It locks in moisture (up to 41% more, according to Curlsmith’s tests) without weighing hair down.

The In-Shower Style Fixer (£24) is an anti-frizz styling gel designed to be used on soaking wet hair. Like the name suggests the best place to apply it is in the shower and I just smooth it down my hair using the “praying hands” method before scrunching it and drying with my diffuser.

Salomé by Oscar Wilde – Theatre Royal Haymarket, London

Wow. Oscar Wilde’s Salomé is probably one of his least known plays (Lady Windermere’s Fan, An Ideal Husband) but was actually one of his biggest grossing and most controversial. The Gesher Theatre Repertoire take this production stratospheric with their portrayal of the Biblical story in an amazing, West End production.

The story of Salomé is easy to follow despite the dialogue being over 100 years old. Salomé (Neta Roth) is the stepdaughter of King Herod (Doron Tavori), who is married to her mother (Lena Fraifeld). Jon the Baptist (Shir Sayag) is referred to as Jokanaan in the play, and is imprisoned by Herod for Jokanaan’s comments about Herod’s wife, Herodias.  Herodias. Thinks nothing of Jokanaan, but her daughter Salomé is obsessed by his voice and wants to meet him. Her obsession grows, and she wants to touch him and kiss his mouth but Jokanaan, believing she is the “daughter of Sodam” tells her to stay away from him and that she will never kiss him.

Herod becomes infatuated with Salomé and begs her to dance for him, exclaiming that she can have anything in his kingdom if she does so. Herodias begs her daughter not to dance for her husband, but eventually, Salomé dances the dance of the seven veils for her stepfather.  In return, she tells him only after he has sworn on oath to give her anything, that she wants, “The head of Jokanaan on a silver platter.” The discussion goes on for some time as Herod offers her anything but the death of John the Baptist, as Herod is fearful of what may happen if he kills a prophet. He eventually relents though, and Salomé gets her wish.

I won’t give away the ending but let’s say it’s fitting, and very dramatic.

The creative production of this play is beyond amazing. Based on the troubles in the Middle East, there isn’t a corner spared which hasn’t been thought out carefully. You forget that this play is 125+ years old as the costumes, stage scenery and acting are exemplary.  I cannot over emphasise how good the acting is in this production, especially Neta Roth and Doron Davori, who create the most amazing energy and Roth especially, who is in nearly every scene of the one-act play, has a talent you only see in the West End. I also need to pay respect to Shir Sayag who plays John the Baptist. The scenes where he is captive and then again when Salomé meets him face-to-face are astonishing. 

I came away from the play with a new found respect for Wilde, but this production takes it to a whole new place. It’s a very thought provoking, modern take on an ancient story but an exceptionally well written Oscar Wilde play. I could go back several times and see this production, for the creative freshness it brings but the outstanding cast and their interpretation of the story, it left me in awe. Exceptional!

Elemay Starry Nights Luxury Refillable Ceramic Candle

When it comes to candles, I’ve found it’s worth paying a little more for a better quality candle. While cheaper ones will flicker away quite happily, many are made with paraffin wax, which can release soot and toxins into the air. Spend a bit more, however, and you get something altogether different. Natural wax candles burn more cleanly, with a steadier flame and the scent actually smells like what it says on the box.

Which brings me to Elemay candles – they’re made from 100% natural soy wax with lead-free cotton wicks, making them just as as kind to the air as they are beautiful to look at. The brand was dreamed up by Ellie while she was on maternity leave. And you can tell – this isn’t some faceless corporation churning out identical jars of wax. Every scent has been chosen with care to bring a sense of calm, joy and a little bit of luxury into your day. And I think we can all agree, we need more of that.

With notes of jasmine, zesty citrus, sweet musk and vanilla, the Starry Nights fragrance is inspired by Steephill Cove on the Isle of Wight with Ellie wanting the candle to capture the magic of a clear summer night under a starry sky.

In my opinion candles should look as good as they smell and Elemay certainly delivers on that front. Each pot is uniquely glazed and the Starry Nights pot has midnight blues and dusky purples to reflect the starry sky above the coast. The combination of the fragrances is lovely though! The serum helps condition nails and skin before you apply the cream. It can be applied alone, but I like to apply it before I’m sitting down at my desk to work, so that it works in all the goodness as I type.

The Conditioning Cream is the ‘top coat’ which is a rich, sweet almond and aloe vera combination, with added cucumber. You can really smell the aroma of the cucumber when you apply it, and as it absorbs in, it leaves a softness to your skin. In combination with the serum, the two work together so that you have long lasting nourishment to help your hands last winter.

Lastly, there’s the glass file and the Buff & Shine tool. The glass file lasts forever (literally, they never smooth) so this is a really good gift or life-long apparatus to keep by your side. The Buff & Shine tool is used on naked nails to take away any ridges or unevenness on your nails, and gives them a shine before you take the paint to them.

TEOXANE RHA is a patented hyaluronic acid, for skin hydration and anti-aging. Teoxane RHA forms a mesh on the surface of the skin to maintain moisture in the epidermis and strengthens the skin by preventing moisture loss. This leaves the skin looking not just hydrated, but plump and smooth too.  

The Discovery Set includes 5 products that are used in combination to create optimal skin conditions. The Micellar Solution cleanses the skin in preparation for the treatments. Anua Heartleaf Pore Control Cleansing Oil

If you’ve never used oil to remove dirt, make-up and clean pores before, then let me enlighten you… most make-up removers used to be 100% oil. This was a long time ago, when they weren’t fragranced though, and if you held onto them for too long, they would go rancid and smell. Think Petroleum Jelly but a bit softer! Oil does indeed remove dirt, but nowadays we have a more sophisticated approach and a much nicer selection to use.

Anua Heartleaf Pore Control is a cleansing oil which removed make-up, but also dirt, build up and generally anything that gets into the pores on your face. It’s lighter than most oils, and has a slight, fresh fragrance about it but nothing heavy. To use Anua Cleansing Oil, it takes just a small amount distributed over the dry skin of your face and massaged in for a minute or two. You can feel the softness of the oil as it works over your skin.  To remove the cleanser, use warm water and I like to use the reusable make-up remover pads that you can put in the wash. They seem more robust than most cleansing pads, and yes, they help remove both the oil and the dirt that the oil removes!

After a light brush of warm water, my skin is cleaner and Anua Heartleaf Pore Control Cleansing Oil manages to remove traces of make-up and dirt, including stubborn mascara.  The cleansing oil also kept my skin hydrated, which is what you’d expect from an oil but in these autumn and winter months, air conditioning and heating really don’t help your skin.  If you are in need of some de-puffing during the Christmas season, then I can highly recommend Anua Heartleaf Pore Control Cleansing Oil for some facial massage too. Oil is essential for facial massages and this lighter, more nutritious oil worked a treat!

I had seen reviews for Infrared and Thermal brushes, which promise to make your hair straighter, more manageable and give a better finish than just tongs or straighteners, so I was eager to have a go at these and see if they make a decent Christmas present! Could it replace my usual basket of hair styling products?

The infrared brush plugs in like a hairdryer or straighteners but is used like a normal every day brush.  It does heat up quickly too. You can air dry or hair dry your hair, but it is the 142 LED lights which work on your hair to give it a smooth, sleek look with the heat generated allowing you to style into curls like you would a curling tong.

The brush can be used daily, but I would not recommend using the brush to dry your hair as such – it works much better if your hair is already dry. The extra long cable means you can stand up to use it at the bathroom mirror or keep it out of the way of little hands as it does get very hot.

The ceramic barrel heats up very quickly to 200 degrees centigrade but the temperature button means you can adapt the heat from 160-200 degrees centigrade to depend on how you want to use it.  The heat allows your hair to style as if it were a hairdryer but when your scalp is exposed to red light, it stimulates the hair follicles to grow. Using the brush daily might help replace lost hair and make your hair more healthy. An added bonus of the STYLPRO Red & Infrared Thermal Brush heating up and styling quickly is that it doesn’t have the noise of a hairdryer, so if you’re getting ready in the morning and don’t want to wake the whole house, this is the perfect way to style! The brush also makes it easier to style curls, which I absolutely cannot do with straighteners, so this is an easier option.

It might take you a little while to get used to a corded hairbrush, but I started by working on dry hair and in very small sections to get the curls right. You learn how long you need to hold the curls to get the right shape, and the brush does get very hot so be careful. You soon find out why there’s a thermal glove included!

The STYLPRO Red & Infrared Thermal Brush is not just a gift at Christmas, but it can replace the tongs and straighteners at the same time.  The bouncy curls give more volume to your hair too, and minimal products are needed to keep the lovely curl shape.

Mad Beauty’s Winnie The Pooh Bath & Beauty Advent Calendar is not for children, but for adults who love the book characters but want the grown-up luxury of a beauty advent calendar this year!

With 24 days (unlike some beauty calendars that only have 12 days) this calendar contains a selection of different beauty gifts such as clay face masks, body lotion, bath milk and lip balms. There’s also some beauty tools in there too including Hydrogel under eye masks (great for putting on whilst sitting in the bath), lip mask, body puff and nail files.

Most of the pieces have the Winnie The Pooh characters on them, like this nail file and hand cream, with some pieces able to last well into 2026 and be used again and again. There’s bath bombs and bath salts that can only be used once, but when you add up the value of all the 24 gifts, they last much longer than just advent. The smaller pieces are great for handbags or going on holiday too.

I know that there are always staples that I need for myself throughout the year, and I hate having to buy things like body lotion and bath bombs for myself when I know I’m going to get them in a gift set at Christmas!  You don’t have to be a lover of Winnie The Pooh to be able to use and enjoy this advent calendar either, the gifts have been selected thoughtfully so that anyone can use them.

Mylee Gel Nail Polish

With Christmas, nail preferences change and suddenly you can wear bright red, gold and glittery nail colours to work and no one will bat an eyelid! Mylee have a range of nail gels and for Christmas 2025, we were sent the Gel Nail Polish Quality Treats set – two gel nail polishes in red and gold, and both glittery too.

Named Quality Treats as a set of two gels, presumably because they make a great gift, they come in a gingerbread house box set.  The colours are called Honeycomb Glow and Candy Cane Crush and glide on easily with just one coating, as is normal with gel polish. If you’ve never used gel polish before, then it’s worth knowing that these polishes will need a UV lamp for 120 seconds or a Mylee LED lamp for 60 seconds. No top coat is needed, but if you don’t set them under either the LED or the UV lights, they won’t set at all and you’ll find you have damaged nails for hours and remnants of polish everywhere for days!

The colours are stunning and would look great at Christmas, or even for a New Year bash and because they’re gel, they will last much longer than varnish, up to 2 weeks.

Curlsmith Hair Products

Like many people with curly hair, I’ve spent years straightening and blow drying it and it’s only in the last couple of years that I’ve ditched the straighteners and started to embrace my curls. They are currently quite dry and unruly and it’s taken a lot of trial and error (and more money than I care to admit) to find a routine that really works. I’m always on the look out for new products to try and Curlsmith has been on my radar for a while, so I was delighted when a parcel of their products arrived for me to try.

The Full Body Weightless Cleanser (RRP £22) lathers beautifully and smells gorgeous – a lovely light, flowery fragrance that makes me want to keep smelling my hair all day long! The Full Body Milk Conditioner (RRP £22), with its handy pump dispenser, is easy to work through my hair and I found I didn’t need much to hydrate my curls. I leave it on for the suggested couple of minutes before scrunching and rinsing. My curls love the hydration and it leave sthem soft, bouncy, and far less frizzy. Even after a couple of days, they still look smooth and defined, which never normally happens with my hair!

Ordinarily, unless I spend ages carefully drying my hair, I end up with a halo of frizz. But since I started using these products I’ve found my curls spring back to life with no frizz in sight and once dry are defined, bouncy and look amazing.

The Frizz Rescue Finishing Serum (RRP £25) is enriched with sweet almond oil and argan oil has really helped banish the frizz. I’ve been using a blob about the size of a 5p which I warm in my hands before smoothing over my curls, concentrating on the top where the frizz is usually the worst. It instantly tames flyaways and is also great for defining individual curls. It does take a bit of trial and error to judge the right amount so start with a small amount and build up, otherwise you may end up with greasy looking curls.

Refreshing curls has always been the hardest part of my curly journey so I was curious to see how the Shake & Shine would perform. The lightweight mist sprays easily, locking moisture into the hair – in fact in Curlsmith tests it provided up to a 41% increase in moisture. It’s been a real game changer for my curls – a few sprays, a quick scrunch, and suddenly my curls bounce back, looking defined and revived with almost no effort.

Curlsmith products are vegan, cruelty-free, and packed with natural ingredients. I’m really impressed with these four products and the results speak for themselves. My curls are shinier, smoother, and, on most days, even cooperative. Every so often they do their own thing, but that’s curls for you!

I have suffered with eczema for many years, most of the time it’s under control but every now and again it flares up, with my hands and feet suffering the most. A cosy blanket is one of those gifts that you don’t realise you need until you receive one and then wonder how you ever managed without it! There’s nothing better than snuggling up on the sofa, watching a festive film, whilst snuggled up in a cuddly blanket. And they’re not just for the sofa – pop one on the bed and it’s perfect for keeping the chill away on those frosty winter nights.

Bedsure recently sent me one of their Sherpa Fleece Blankets which are available in four sizes – Throw/Single, Twin/Double, Queen and King. With an impressive 22 colours to choose from ranging from soft pastels like pink, cream and lilac to bolder shades like navy, black and dark grey there’s a colour to suit all tastes whether it’s for a Scandi-style living room or to add a pop of colour to a bedroom.

The Throw/Single size measures 130 x 150cm and is the perfect size for sharing on the sofa or layering over the bed. Sure recently sent me a few products from their Whole Body Deodorant range to try. Now, as a woman of a certain age, I’m no stranger to the dreaded hot flushes – and when you add in a daily cycle commute, it’s fair to say I get through a lot of deodorant, especially in the summer. So, I was interested to see how these products would cope on a hot day full of pedalling, meetings and general running around.

I tried the fresh citrus stick deodorant first and, just in case, popped it into my bag for a lunchtime top-up. But to my pleasant surprise, lunchtime came and went – and I was still as fresh as when I left the house.

Now, I’ve never used a cream deodorant before and wasn’t sure what to expect but was it was a surprise hit! It has a creamy texture and feels more like a body lotion than deodorant and even on a hot day I didn’t need to reapply it. The scent is fresh without being overpowering, and it didn’t irritate my skin at all, even straight after shaving. It’s also really versatile, you can use it on your feet, chest, or anywhere you tend to sweat more.  

Then there’s the Wild Rose aerosol, with its light, floral fragrance that felt delightfully summery. It’s brilliant for a quick all-over refresh after cycling to the office and it doesn’t just mask odour, it helps prevent it from forming in the first place.

Dermatologically tested and approved by the British Skin Foundation, the range contains 0% aluminium and are designed to neutralise odour before it even begins. I’ve found that all three styles keep me feeling fresh all day long and easily fit in my handbag so I can freshen up whenever I feel the need.

We love discovering new beauty brands at The Review Studio so were really pleased when a parcel arrived from B:UNDENIABLE. Launched in July 2025 their GRNDRIIZING Collection blends high performance formulas with holistic wellness, setting a new standard in the beauty world. My favourite product is the Radiant Quartz Face & Body Bronzer (£36). Got2b GLUED Blasting Freeze Hairspray and got2b GLUSED Brows & Edges

I’ve never seen the got2b GLUED range before so I was pleasantly surprised to see how well their products work. I was sent the got2b GLUED Blasting Freeze Hairspray and got2b GLUSED Brows & Edges, both of which are available at Boots and Superdrugs.

Got2b GLUED Blasting Freeze Hairspray is a silicones-free, vegan hairspray for maximum hold that lasts up to 72 hours. It can be used on all hair types, and has a hold that sets in seconds. A quick spray shows that it sets promptly and manages to hold even the heaviest of curls.  I tried this when styling after straightening my hair and adding a ‘flick’ to the ends. Even with tying it back, my hair stayed firm until I brushed it out. It does wash out easily though and isn’t sticky. This will be a great lifesaver when I have to have my hair styled the day before a wedding and I need to travel without flattening my barnet!

The got2b GLUSED Brows & Edges is a 2 in 1 gel for brows and the edges of brows, especially if they have just been dyed.  The generous brush fixes brow hairs in place whist the gel, which is also vegan and silicones-free, keeps brows where you want them.  It’s easily washed away with make-up remover at the end of the day but I particularly like this for something like a wedding or an all-day even where you want everything to stay in place. It’s called GLUED for a reason! You can feel it drying too, which is also reassuring when you’ve spent ages doing your make-up. Just be sure not to use it on your eyelashes or close to your eyes.
