Altruist Christmas Box

The cold weather always plays havoc with my skin, so I was really pleased to receive a lovely selection of skincare products from Altruist. The Christmas Box contains four fantastic products, chosen to offer round the year skincare and the products are beautifully packed in red shredded paper, making them look very festive.

Altruist products have been developed by consultant dermatologist and skin cancer surgeon Dr Andrew Birnie and whilst they are suitable for all skin types, they are especially suitable for sensitive skin.

Inside the box are the following products

• Altruist SPF 30 Face Fluid – 50ml
• Altruist Moisturising Fluid – 50ml
• Altruist Primer SPF 50 – 30ml
• Altruist Moisturising Body Lotion – 200ml

It can take a month to see improvements in your skin when you change your skincare routine and I’m pleased to say I am now seeing positive results – my skin feels more hydrated and now has a radiance that definitely wasn’t there before.

The Moisturising Fluid contains 0.5% Hyaluronic Acid and is enriched with glycerin, urea and shea butter to enhance the skin’s natural moisturising factors. It can be used as a both a day and night cream offering plenty of hydration for my dry, sensitive skin.  The cream soaked into my skin without needing to rub too much and it felt instantly hydrating.

I always use a face cream with SPF protection no matter what time of year as even a sunny day in the winter or a cloudy day in the summer can have very damaging UVA & UVB rays. I spend a lot of time outdoors, so it is very important for my skincare products to have a SPF rating so was pleased to find that both the Face Fluid and the Primer are SPF rated. The SPF30 Face Fluid is nice and light and is easily applied on top of the Moisturising Fluid. Once applied it doesn’t feel greasy or sticky like some SPF creams tend to be and is perfect for everyday protection.

The SPF50 Primer is a light cream which is applied before foundation, as well as offering protection from UVA and UVB rays. It absorbs into my skin nicely, creating a soft, hydrated canvas for my makeup which now seems to last for longer.

The moisturising body lotion is a lovely rich consistency and is nice and easy to apply. The skin on my arms and legs is quite dry and this body lotion is very moisturising and smoothing and I have noticed that after using it morning and night for a month a persistent patch of dry skin on the back of my arm has cleared up too.

I am really pleased with the Altruist products, my skin is looking much better and is no longer dry and problematic.  The Christmas Gift Set is a lovely set and is bound to be well received by anyone finding it underneath the Christmas Tree this year.

Altruist also donate 40p for every box sold, to charities that support children with albinism so when buying the giftset you are also helping a good cause.

Epaderm Review

Disclaimer: We received the product for the purpose of this review but all words and opinions are our own

I have suffered from eczema most of my life and it is especially bad on my hands and feet. It has flared up again over summer, so I was very pleased when Epaderm sent me some of their products to try.

Epaderm Cream and Epaderm Ointment are both emollients which are moisturising treatments that you apply on to skin to soothe and hydrate it. They work by covering the skin with a protective film which helps to trap in moisture. They are used to soothe dry, itchy or scaly skin conditions such as #eczema and #psoriasis and help prevent patches of inflammation and flare-ups of these conditions.

Epaderm is free from fragrance, colouring and SLS and is recommended by doctors, it is the no.1 prescribed emollient ointment in the UK.

Since I received them, I have been using the Epaderm ointment at night to slather over my hands and feet so that it can soak in overnight and calm the redness and itchiness. Over the last 2 weeks it’s worked incredibly well and has definitely reduced the redness and flakiness on my hands and feet. I have been keeping the cream in my handbag and using it as a handcream during the day to top up the good work the ointment is doing at night.

The pump dispenser on the cream was easy to use and dispensed just the right amount, the cream is really easy to smooth in, you don’t need to rub too hard, and it is absorbed quickly. The consistency of both the cream and ointment are perfect, it’s not runny or sticky so is very easy to apply and it doesn’t leave your hands feeling too greasy after application. When the cream is applied, it feels instantly soothing on the skin and makes the skin feel soft and calm.

This is a very soothing and moisturising cream and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who suffers from eczema, psoriasis or itchy skin. It is suitable for all ages, including babies

Epaderm Cream is available in 50g, 150g and 500g recyclable packs and the ointment in 125g, 500g and 1kg tubs.

Bio-D Green Cleaning Products

Bio D Furniture Polish, Dishwasher Bar and Dishwasher Tablets

Disclaimer – We received this item free for the purpose of this review/feature but all words and opinions are our own.

We have been reminded this week what climate change can do to our everyday lives, so we have been exploring more environmentally friendly options to clean our homes.

Bio-D (https://biod.co.uk) was founded in 1989 when the founder realized the cleaning products used on commercial ships were also in everyday household cleaning products. The idea of creating products that were effective, ethical and didn’t cost the Earth was born.

Bio-D sent us several products to test as I haven’t ever used their range before.  I was keen to use the Bio-D Dishwasher Tablets as I find my commercial tablets are very harsh on my glassware, and I also received a Dishwash Bar (never used a bar for washing up before either!) and Bio-D 100% Natural Furniture Polish.

Bio-D Dishwasher Tablets

First, I tried the Bio-D Dishwasher Tablets which are also a new product for Bio-D. I had pan fried some chicken that night and wanted to test how the dishwasher tablets handled burnt butter and spices. In went the pan with the rest of the crockery and I put one of the tablets in the detergent department, complete with the plastic wrapper still on which dissolves in the wash, and set the temperature to 40C which is the normal, quick wash for my dishwasher.  The results are below! The pan cleaned up really nicely and didn’t even need a rinse beforehand!

Some of the plates had a little residue on them when they came out of the dishwasher so this was the perfect time to use the Bio-D Dishwasher Bar.  Having only ever used washing up liquid, the instructions were to wet the bar thoroughly first, then using a brush or cloth, lather up the soap bar until there is enough to wash the plates with and wash as normal.

Bio-D Dishwasher Bar

The first time you get the bar wet it takes a little bit of effort to get the soap suds but with a sink full of water it doesn’t take long to soften and you can use the bar as if you were washing your hands.  There really was not difference in the clean between the bar and washing up liquid, and they’re 100% plastic free, being handmade in Yorkshire. Yes, they even leave your hands feeling moisturized too!

Bio-D Furniture Polish
Half this table was coated in Bio-D Furniture Polish…

Lastly, I had a go at using the Bio-D 100% Natural Furniture Polish.  Made from plant based wax and natural oils, it has the same consistency as High Street furniture polish, and leaves the same waxy texture on furniture as the photo shows.  The linseed oil conditions wood and with prolonged use protects furniture from spills and marks.  I left the polish on this table for about 30 minutes then rubbed off the excess to leave it shiny and clean with a protective layer. There is no sticky residue though and it left my table nicely conditioned.

There are lots of other products on the Bio-D website which all follow the effective, ethical and “doesn’t cost the Earth” mantra, and are available in health shops and stores such as Robert Dyas, Wholefoods and Oxfam.
