Now that September has arrived my Instagram feed and inbox is quickly filling up with one thing – advent calendars! And not the chocolate kind we loved as children, but fabulous grown-up versions bursting with goodies. Some of them are absolutely gorgeous, but they also come with hefty price tags (many are £100+) so I was very excited to discover the Yankee Candle 24 Days of Fragrance Advent Calendar with a much more purse friendly price of £28.99.

Hidden behind each of the 24 windows is a 9.8g tealight candle and in the lead up to Christmas you’ll discover eight different Christmassy scents, from sweet and comforting Christmas Cookie to warming Cinnamon Stick, the freshness of Silver Sage & Pine, and the cosy magic of Christmas Eve. There are also more luxurious scents like Amber & Sandalwood, Black Cherry, Wild Orchid, and the dreamy Winter Night Stars. On day one, there’s also a little glass tealight holder to pop the candles in which can also be used long after the Christmas scents have faded.

Each tealight burns for around 4 to 6 hours, which means plenty of cosy evenings filled with Christmassy fragrances. I love the idea of lighting one each night as you count down the days or you could save up a few of the same scent and dot them around the room to really fill your home with the festive fragrances. After a busy day, there’s nothing lovelier than relaxing by the glow of twinkling fairy lights, a crackling fire, and the comforting scent of cinnamon drifting through the air – the perfect way to unwind in the lead up to Christmas.

I love candles, my house is filled with them, and I can’t resist the candle section in shops, spending ages sniffing every single one before convincing myself that I absolutely need another one (or three!) Over the years I have discovered that it is worth spending money on decent candles, if you don’t, you may be disappointed as candles do tend to vary from brand to brand. Some barely give off any scent, while others burn unevenly and leave you feeling totally disappointed. That’s why, once you find a good brand, you stick with it – and for me, that brand is Woodwick.

Now, I’m a firm believer that a candle isn’t just about the scent – it’s about the whole experience. It needs to look stylish in your home, set the mood, and actually make an impact. And trust me, Woodwick candles tick all those boxes. Not only do they look fabulous, but the fragrances are divine and last. I like to change scents depending on the time of year and my current favourites are from Woodwick’s Haze range – Terra Haze and Solar Haze.

Terra Haze is a gorgeous grey candle with a deep, earthy fragrance that reminds me of that fresh smell after rain – you know the one? It’s got hints of cedarwood and moss, and it just makes everything feel warm and inviting. Perfect for those chilled-out evenings with a cup of tea (or a glass of something stronger!).

Unwritten Nala The Frenchie Puppy Candle

French Bulldog owners will love the Unwritten Puppy Candle with Nala the Frenchie being the star of the show! This is a beautiful candle in the shape of a Frenchie (called Nala, naturally) that makes the perfect gift this Christmas.

With intricate design, this candle stands around 16 centimetres (about 5 inches) high and portrays a sitting Frenchie puppy in a white/cream natural wax. The design is exclusive to Unwritten so you won’t find it anywhere else around the world and the wax is blended with a delicious vanilla-like scent that fills your home even if the candle isn’t lit, known as cold scent throw. There are lots of scents to choose from including Lavender & Chamomile, Rose, Jasmine and we were sent Sandalwood & Vanilla. You really get a hit of the scent when you open the box and even though the candle is wrapped up, I can see why they call it cold scent throw! Unwrapping it, the tiny details around Nala’s eyes and nose are visible, just as if it was a fine art painting.

The candle is quite heavy, and it’s not recommended to put it straight onto a polished surface so I used a candle plate in the fireplace. It’s easy to light and burn down, and with lighting, more scent is thrown out to fill the room. You don’t need other scented candles lit at the same time as the fragrance would probably be overpowering but the vanilla essence filled my room like a diffuser. The scent lingers a little too, and the candle itself still throws out scent even when it’s been lit and then extinguished.

Unwritten use a unique blend of their own wax that doesn’t include any genetically modified ingredients, palm oil or paraffin so you won’t get any unnecessary smells and it’s better for the environment too.
