With Christmas just around the corner, the shops are full of festive treats. While there will always be a place for a traditional Christmas cake or pudding, it’s rather lovely to discover something a little different – and this Red Velvet Dubai Chocolate Cake from Egg Free Cake Box is just that.

The cake is a beautifully light and moist red velvet sponge, generously layered with a silky pistachio cream and Egg Free Cake Box’s signature Dubai mix, which brings a gentle nuttiness and a pleasing sweetness. The sides are neatly finished with classic red velvet crumbs there’s also the option to personalise your cake; ours simply read “Enjoy”, but you can choose your own message when ordering.

On top of the cake is delicate creamy piping, adorned with a light sprinkle of suter pheni and crunchy pistachio pieces, while fresh strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and blackberries add a cheerful splash of colour. It’s decorative without being fussy and my husband especially enjoyed the lighter topping as he finds cakes full of buttercream much too sweet.

I must confess I hadn’t come across Egg Free Cake Box before, so I was surprised to discover several shops within a short distance of home. With over 250 locations nationwide, their impressive Click & Collect service means you can order a cake and collect it within just an hour – perfect for last-minute get togethers. The company started back in 2008 with a single shop in East London and has grown steadily, always placing an emphasis on quality ingredients and careful craftsmanship.

All of their cakes are completely egg free, reflecting the founders’ strict lacto-vegetarian diet. When I was eating the cake I really couldn’t tell that it was egg free – there’s certainly no compromise when it comes to flavour or texture – which also makes these cakes a reassuring choice for parties where egg allergies may be a concern.

Our cake was delivered by a man in a car and it was well packaged in a large cake box. When I opened the box, it looked even more delicious than I’d hoped! The red velvet sponge had a lovely depth of flavour and wasn’t too sweet, while the pistachio and Dubai cream brought a luxurious nuttiness that worked incredibly well and make the cake incredibly moreish!

While it’s at its best within 24 hours, we popped it in the fridge for an extra day and the sponge stayed beautifully light and soft and was just as tasty as it was on the first day.

This is the sort of cake that would sit proudly on a Christmas Day table, perfect for sharing with family, and it makes a cracking alternative to the usual Christmas pudding – or a very good excuse to have both. We all thought it was absolutely delicious and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Egg Free Cake Box. With my birthday landing at the end of December, I can already tell you where my cake will be coming from this year.

I always seem to get chapped lips in winter and much prefer natural lip balms as they seem to soothe my lips much better. Using them both morning and night has become second nature, so I was quite excited when the parcel of Neve’s Bees lip balms arrived and I could tell from the minute I opened the first tin that these lip balms are much better quality than an off the shelf lip balm. They smell lovely and have a silky smooth texture which glides easily onto lips, The balm is quite solid in the tin but quickly warms up with the warmth of a finger and once on your lips it doesn’t feel greasy or sticky and it leaves my dry lips feeling soft and hydrated.

I’ve been spending a lot of time outdoors this week, so I’ve been able to really put these lip balms to the test. My ideal lip balm is one that pampers and nourishes lips, keeping them soft and hydrated no matter what the conditions are and these lip balms definitely ticked all these boxes. Whether I’ve been out walking, cycling or when I was battling Storm Claudia, a quick application of this lip balm has helped to keep my lips protected and prevent them from drying out and I’m confident they’ll continue to keep my lips hydrated as the cold weather settles in.

The three balms I have been trying out are –

Honey Vanilla – this is Neve’s Bees least fragranced lip balm and has just a hint of vanilla to soothe lips and allows the natural honey take centre stage.

Rosey is my favourite of the three balms, it is made from thousands of crushed rose petals and scented with Rose Otto and Rose Geranium. It is rich in vitamins A and E and it’s really helped soothe my dry lips.

Buttermint is inspired by the classic sweets and contains a blend of vanilla and peppermint. This lip balm is great for the men in your life who need to protect their lips but don’t want a flowery or feminine fragrance. This nourishing lip balm is full of goodness and is ideal for restoring softness and moisture.

A little treat for yourself before the spring sunshine sets in or some nice cosy nights early to bed, the Silk Eye Mask from The Silk Club is useful to everyone. Made with 100% Mulberry Silk, it’s available in 5 colours and two sizes; Small- Medium and Medium-Large. As it’s made of pure silk, it’s also environmentally friendly and biodegradable. Does it work though?

The softness of the silk means it fits most faces with just the elastic band in place and covers the whole eye area. It’s not uncomfortable to lay on the mask to sleep either, and as the elastic band is covered in silk too, it’s very delicate on the skin. Silk means it’s kind to your skin microbiome and helps prevent pillow face. I know a lot of women who swear by silk pillowcases to help prevent wrinkles and the Silk Eye Mask is similar.

To block out light, the mask is padded to give maximum blackout. Once you get used to having something over your face all night, it becomes comforting especially in the spring and summer when the sun comes up. It’s particularly good for travelling too, when you need to sleep on planes or in a car. Sadly, it doesn’t do anything for noise but it does help you concentrate on sleeping! Christmas is coming (yes, already!), and it’s the perfect excuse to treat your friends, your family…. or yourself! The Lip Balm has that subtle cherry scent and glides on effortlessly, giving a lovely hit of moisture. It feels protective and soothing, exactly what you want when the winter wind picks up.

St Tropez Self Tan

This whopping 200ml bottle of St Tropez is the latest formula from St Tropez to get you glowing in time for summer 2026!

The St Tropez self-tanning serum is made with 100% natural tanning active and scient backed skincare ingredients. That sounds very scientific, but if you’ve been a self tan fan in the past and been put off because of the smell, then rest assured that the St Tropez Self Tan of today does not have that odour. In fact, I don’t think it has any odour at all which is why I could put it on in the morning and then forget about it!

The St Tropez Self Tan is a clear serum that goes on with out streaks and then develops over 8 hours. You need to exfoliate and moisturise first, and you’re supposed to use a St Tropez mitt but I was able to put mine on in the morning and let it dry. There’s a slight shimmer to the serum that allows you to see where you’re applying it which is really helpful when you haven’t got the deep brown colour to guide you. It takes a while to blend in but once it’s dry you can neither see it nor feel it whilst it works its magic.

You can apply just once to get a week’s worth of glow or apply it over a few days to get a deeper tan. It never goes really dark though, it’s more of a gradual tan but that looks more natural. I’ve tried it for a one-off party and it gives a sin-kissed glow, much the same as you get over summer if you’re just in the garden, but building up over a few days you get a lot more depth. Could be a life saver for the Christmas period!

MCoBeauty Super Pen 4-In-1 Liner

This is a brilliant stocking filler – a ‘pen’ which can be taken anywhere thanks to the click-down selection. Yes ,you do remember these from school! With the same format as a Biro, you can click to have an eyeliner (black), lip liner (pink), brow liner (light brown) or highlighter (white). The are all inter-useable in this lightweight pen style which can be put in a handbag or on holiday in a make-up bag where space is tight. Also brilliant for a night out when you don’t want to take many items!

The liners have different textures so I wouldn’t recommend mixing them together, but the eye liner could be used as a brow liner if the light brown colour isn’t a match for you. I personally wouldn’t use the highlighter that much but the light pink lip liner would be very well used by me daily. They’re all really good quality though, and there is a good supply there in the pen.

This is the type of product that would change how you do your make-up just because it’s so convenient to carry around, and it’s really easy to use. Teenagers would particularly enjoy this as a way of carrying make-up around but I know I’ll be taking this on holiday with me!

McoBeauty Flawless Glow Foundation

Treat yourself at Christmas to a perfect foundation glow from McoBeauty.

Available in 10 different shades, the McoBeauty Flawless Glow is an all-coverage foundation which works like a photo filter. You don’t need a brush with this foundation either, there’s what’s called a ‘Doe Foot’ applicator which allows you to dab an exact amount of base to your skin. Once applied, I used my fingers to blend it in but you can use a brush at this point. It was a full coverage of foundation on my face which wasn’t waxy or powdery at all and didn’t take long to blend. I particularly liked how it has that ‘glow’ to it too. There’s a slight shimmer to the finish (which actually dried really quickly) that bounces the light and gives you that Christmas glow.

The McoBeauty Flawless Glow Foundation makes a great stocking filler too, it’s really versatile and suits all ages thanks to both its skin coverage and the shine to give a healthy glow instead of the winter pasty look that so many chalky foundations leave. I liked the generous size too, and it would fit perfectly in a Christmas cracker!

I have become a big fan of facial oils in the last year. Facial oils are no longer greasy and pore-clogging, but contain added vitamins and minerals to repair and replenish your skin and make it feel smooth. Essentially, the oil works to keep moisture trapped and in your skins’ layers instead of evaporating away. Olverum Pure Radiance Facial Oil does just that, with a specially formulated combination which leave skin feeling soft. I tried it out this week as part of the Christmas gifts at Space NK and loved every minute of it!

Olverum Pure Radiance may be called an ‘oil’ but it’s very light in texture when you add it to your skin, and completely translucent. It smells absolutely divine as well so it’s a real treat to be able to apply it. It’s very light and absorbs easily but gives a light dewy glow. With the fragrance as well, it’s like a very delicate essential oils mixture when you wear it, so it’s perfect for days when you’re not wearing make up or if you put it on first thing in the morning before you apply make up later on. Within about a minute, there was no oiliness, just a light glow to my skin.

Olverum Pure Radiance Facial Oil contains high potency vitamins C and E to work together as an alternative to retinol. There’s also Bakuchiol, Cacay Oil and Rosehip Oil (which give it the fragrance) and Patchouli Extract which mimics the CBD properties. Finally, Cardamom Oil calms your skin, including fine lines so that your appearance is luminous. Suitable for all skin types, it’s light enough to not cause any acne (which I am usually prone to.)

I love facial oils now as a way of nourishing my skin without having to think about it. Used daily, it keeps fine lines at bay but doesn’t make your skin oily, and has the same nurturing effect as a facial but with less time. I did use Olverum Pure Radiance Facial Oil after a face mask to keep the moisture in and the germs out but you can happily use it daily as a base, or to cleanse your skin as it is an oil after all. My preference is to use it instead of a moisturiser when I’m working from home during the winter months and don’t need SPF, but I do get exposed to air conditioning or central heating which leaves my skin dry. It also works on lips and hands so there’s nothing that goes to waste when you apply it.

The base notes of musk and vanilla add a gentle warmth to the fragrance. Now that the evenings are drawing in and there’s a distinct nip in the air, I love to curl up in front of the fire with a good book and a few candles flickering around the room to create a cosy, relaxing atmosphere. At weekends I like to have one burning in the hallway so when friends or family arrive, they’re greeted with a beautiful scent as they step through the door.

Looking out of my window right now, the garden’s covered in a carpet of golden leaves so it’s only right that my candle of choice at the moment is the Yankee Candle Glistening Leaves. The fragrance smells nice and autumnal with fresh top notes of grapefruit, eucalyptus, and Meyer lemon, middle notes of rose, jasmine, and oakmoss followed by the warm, comforting base of amber, patchouli, and vanilla. The scent is fresh and earthy and reminds me of crisp autumn days.

As the candle burns, the beautiful scent fills my living room, lingering long after the candle has been blown out. The jar comes with a lid, making it easy to extinguish, simply place it back on top to gently snuff out the flame and keep the fragrance contained. The two wicks ensure an even burn and with an impressive burn time of 65–80 hours I can see it lasting right through to December, just in time to switch to one a little more festive!

I also love that once the wax has melted away, the labels peel off easily (no sticky residue in sight), leaving a beautiful glass jar that’s ideal for storing makeup brushes, cotton pads, or even a string of fairy lights to get you in a festive mood.

The Catch Me If You Can Bath Bomb is shaped like a cheeky little gingerbread man and fizzed away beautifully in the bath filling the room with a lovely Christmassy scent. The yellow and blue swirls created gorgeous golden patterns in the water before turning the water a very bright green – think the colour of Grotbags face (if you’re old enough to remember her – google her if you’re not!!) whilst the zesty lime and sweet wild orange oils smelt divine and were perfect for helping me relax after a busy day. The illipe butter and extra virgin olive oil in the bath bomb helped leave my skin feeling soft and nourished.

Next up, the Yog Nog Shower Gel and wow, this one’s a Christmas dream. It’s glittery, golden, and smells like sweet, spiced caramel. LUSH shower gels always turn a quick shower into a mini pamper session, and this limited-edition scent might just give my all-time favourite, Snow Fairy, a run for its money!

The Humbug Scrubee Body Scrub is shaped like a cute little bug and is packed with ground almonds and coconut shell for a gentle exfoliation. It also contains hydrating butters and pomegranate molasses which melted into my skin, leaving it lovely and soft. It has a double dose of peppermint and spearmint oils which gives a fresh, tingly feeling which has been perfect for waking me up now the dark winter mornings are here.

If I have to pick a favourite product from the box it has to be the Yule Log Soap. As a self-confessed chocoholic, this one was always going to win me over. It looks just like a slice of Yule log and even smells chocolatey. Made with maple syrup, cocoa butter, and macadamia nut oil, it gives a creamy lather that not only cleans my skin but soothes and hydrates it too. It looks and smells good enough to eat, though best to stick to admiring it every time you wash your hands!

There aren’t many times in the year when you can legitimately purchase a huge box of sweets like the Swizzel Sweet Shop Favourites, but Halloween is one of them! Swizzels have all you need for Halloween Trick Or Treating, and they sent us a huge selection of what’s on offer. Did we sample them? Yes we did. Did we get fed up of so many tubs, pouches and boxes of sweets? No, not yet!

The tub is the largest of the packets in the range at 650 grams. This also doubles up nicely as the bowl that you dish out the sweets from, so we’re going to use this to start with and then fill it up with the rest of the packets! The box is probably the next easiest to use on Halloween and is 324 grams. The pouch is great for filling up your bowl and is 375 grams net.

Tolpa is a Polish skincare brand and it’s now available at Boots. I’ve already used the Lipidrio range and now I’ve trying a couple of products from the Rosacal range, designed for those with sensitive skin.

The Strengthening Regenerating Cream (RRP £12.99) is a real multitasking night cream, it promises to do more than just moisturise, also helping to strengthen and seals blood vessels, making them less sensitive to external factors. It also claims to soothe erythema, calm irritation and even conceal redness thanks to its natural green colouring. On top of that it helps tackle fine lines and wrinkles. That’s quite a list of promises but with my skin in need of some extra TLC, I was hoping that it would make a difference.

The texture is lovely, it sinks in easily without that heavy, greasy feeling some night creams can leave behind. When I wake up, my skin feels soft, calm and properly hydrated. According to Tolpa’s own tests, the cream can reduce persistent redness by 10% after four weeks, even out skin tone and lessen the appearance of spider veins. Hydration levels also jump by 29% after the very first use and last a full 24 hours. After a month I’m pleased to say that my skin is looking much better, it feels plump and hydrated and I’m starting to see a small improvement in my fine lines too.

One thing I really like is the packaging. The cream comes in an aluminium tube, which not only helps keep the product fresher but is also better for the environment. Plus, it’s more hygienic than a jar – no dipping fingers in and spreading bacteria!

I’ve also been using the Rosacal Strengthening Face and Eye Area Micellar Wash Gel (RRP £8.99), which has slotted perfectly into my morning and evening routine. I massage it in gently and rinse with water, finishing with a damp flannel. It’s gentle enough for sensitive skin but still effective – it removes light makeup easily, though I do reach for a stronger cleanser if I’ve gone heavier on the foundation. My skin feels clean, refreshed and never tight or dry afterwards.

Let’s start with the fabric, made from brushed cotton (99% cotton and 1% metallised fibre) they feel wonderfully soft and cosy when you put them on. The fabric is also very durable, making them perfect for both lounging about and sleeping in.

Now, onto the design – the red bow check pattern is the perfect blend of classic and chic with a distinctly Christmassy twist. I know it’s only October, but it’s the perfect time to get started on your Christmas shopping. We’ve been trying out some brilliant beauty treats this week that are perfect as stocking fillers or Secret Santa gifts – little luxuries that are bound to be well received on Christmas morning.

First up, the Rubis Tweezers – in my opinion these are the holy grail of tweezers and perfect for anyone who likes to keep their brows neat and tidy in between salon visits. Lightweight but surprisingly sturdy, they’re well made with an ergonomic design that makes them very comfortable to hold. If you’re shopping for someone with curls then you really need to look at Curlsmith products. The Shake & Shine Curls Refreshing Mist (£24) is my go to product for refreshing my curls – a few spritzes of the lightweight mist and a quick scrunch and tired curls spring back to life looking bouncy and defined again. It locks in moisture (up to 41% more, according to Curlsmith’s tests) without weighing hair down.

The In-Shower Style Fixer (£24) is an anti-frizz styling gel designed to be used on soaking wet hair. Like the name suggests the best place to apply it is in the shower and I just smooth it down my hair using the “praying hands” method before scrunching it and drying with my diffuser.

Salomé by Oscar Wilde – Theatre Royal Haymarket, London

Wow. Oscar Wilde’s Salomé is probably one of his least known plays (Lady Windermere’s Fan, An Ideal Husband) but was actually one of his biggest grossing and most controversial. The Gesher Theatre Repertoire take this production stratospheric with their portrayal of the Biblical story in an amazing, West End production.

The story of Salomé is easy to follow despite the dialogue being over 100 years old. Salomé (Neta Roth) is the stepdaughter of King Herod (Doron Tavori), who is married to her mother (Lena Fraifeld). Jon the Baptist (Shir Sayag) is referred to as Jokanaan in the play, and is imprisoned by Herod for Jokanaan’s comments about Herod’s wife, Herodias. Herodias. Thinks nothing of Jokanaan, but her daughter Salomé is obsessed by his voice and wants to meet him. Her obsession grows, and she wants to touch him and kiss his mouth but Jokanaan, believing she is the “daughter of Sodam” tells her to stay away from him and that she will never kiss him.

Herod becomes infatuated with Salomé and begs her to dance for him, exclaiming that she can have anything in his kingdom if she does so. Herodias begs her daughter not to dance for her husband, but eventually, Salomé dances the dance of the seven veils for her stepfather. In return, she tells him only after he has sworn on oath to give her anything, that she wants, “The head of Jokanaan on a silver platter.” The discussion goes on for some time as Herod offers her anything but the death of John the Baptist, as Herod is fearful of what may happen if he kills a prophet. He eventually relents though, and Salomé gets her wish.

I won’t give away the ending but let’s say it’s fitting, and very dramatic.

The creative production of this play is beyond amazing. Based on the troubles in the Middle East, there isn’t a corner spared which hasn’t been thought out carefully. You forget that this play is 125+ years old as the costumes, stage scenery and acting are exemplary. I cannot over emphasise how good the acting is in this production, especially Neta Roth and Doron Davori, who create the most amazing energy and Roth especially, who is in nearly every scene of the one-act play, has a talent you only see in the West End. I also need to pay respect to Shir Sayag who plays John the Baptist. The scenes where he is captive and then again when Salomé meets him face-to-face are astonishing.

I came away from the play with a new found respect for Wilde, but this production takes it to a whole new place. It’s a very thought provoking, modern take on an ancient story but an exceptionally well written Oscar Wilde play. I could go back several times and see this production, for the creative freshness it brings but the outstanding cast and their interpretation of the story, it left me in awe. Exceptional!

While cheaper ones will flicker away quite happily, many are made with paraffin wax, which can release soot and toxins into the air. Spend a bit more, however, and you get something altogether different. Natural wax candles burn more cleanly, with a steadier flame and the scent actually smells like what it says on the box.

In my opinion candles should look as good as they smell and Elemay certainly delivers on that front. The luxury refillable ceramic candles are in handcrafted ceramic pots, made exclusively for the brand by Sussex-based artist Beth. Each pot is uniquely glazed and the Starry Nights pot has midnight blues and dusky purples to reflect the starry sky above the coast. Mine even arrived with a photograph of the cove taken by Ellie’s dad, and it’s incredible how Beth has echoed the image in her design.

I was surprised to discover that in most areas of the UK, candle jars can’t be recycled, so Elemay’s refill option is such a great idea. It’s not only a more sustainable choice but also a more cost-effective way to enjoy their candles. Refills are priced at £15, while the Starry Nights candle itself is £35.

With autumn here and the cold of the winter around the corner, hand creams and lotions make excellent Christmas gifts. Starting with the Conditioning Nail & Cuticle Cream, this smells divine because it contains sweet almond oil, ginger extract and manuka honey. The honey is for hydrating as well as antibacterial and the ginger helps with fungus and bacteria too. The combination of the fragrances is lovely though! The serum helps condition nails and skin before you apply the cream. It can be applied alone, but I like to apply it before I’m sitting down at my desk to work, so that it works in all the goodness as I type.

The Conditioning Cream is the ‘top coat’ which is a rich, sweet almond and aloe vera combination, with added cucumber. You can really smell the aroma of the cucumber when you apply it, and as it absorbs in, it leaves a softness to your skin. In combination with the serum, the two work together so that you have long lasting nourishment to help your hands last winter.

Lastly, there’s the glass file and the Buff & Shine tool. The glass file lasts forever (literally, they never smooth) so this is a really good gift or life-long apparatus to keep by your side. The Buff & Shine tool is used on naked nails to take away any ridges or unevenness on your nails, and gives them a shine before you take the paint to them.

Every year, I buy a new pair of pyjamas for myself for Christmas. Sometimes I’m on holiday with the family, and sometimes we stay at home, but it’s a lovely tradition to be able to choose what I want to wear for Christmas Eve and what will last me the rest of the year.

They sent us this Christmas Candy Pink Stripe Christmas Shortie In A Bag set for us to try. If you’re wondering what a ‘shortie’ is, then it’s a pyjama set that has shorts for the bottoms instead of trousers. In this set, the top is a short sleeved, button-up top with a collar too. As these are Christmas Gift Sets, they all come in a presentation bag which is easily posted or wrapped up as a gift and look fabulous when opened on Christmas Day!

This limited edition 2025 design is a matching set in candy pink, complete with pink Christmas trees, candy canes, soldiers, wreaths and a festive pink car with Christmas Tree on top! Don’t forget the bright pink stripes too, set off with pink buttons. It’s made of 100% polyester to give the slightly flannelled effect but it also contains 30% recycled fibres. It’s washable at 40 degrees centigrade. The shorts are elasticated waist but with a draw-string too for extra comfy, and the cut for both top and shorts is a comfort fit. The bag is also in the polyester material, which you can use to store the pyjamas or as part of the gift set which makes for a lovely stocking filler as well.

They’re a comfortable fit and useful for when the heating is on high at Christmas or even in the summer when it’s hotter (yes, I wear Christmas pyjamas all year round!) I like that they are shorts in this set, but there are other sets which are full pyjamas and in different designs. There’s a softness to them that makes them easy to sleep in.
