Cavaletto 1.7 litre Digital Kettle from Tower

Disclaimer – We have received this item for free or on a loan basis for the purpose of this review/feature but all words and opinions are our own.

British designer Tower have a range of appliances and cooking aids available this Christmas, including the 1.7 litre Digital Kettle in their Cavaletto range. We were sent this stylish conical-shaped, Italian influenced kettle with a digital display and all-round, 360-degree base which means the kettle can be heated up on the electrical element from any angle. If you’re left-handed, then you know how annoying it is to keep having to switch hands when using the kettle!

The Cavaletto 1.7 litre digital kettle’s most distinctive feature is the temperature control. Conventional kettles only have on/off buttons but the Cavaletto digital kettle has a touch control button which gives you temperatures up to 100 degrees. Starting at 40 degrees for delicate drinks and heating cups, the temperatures increase by 10 degrees with each touch and displays them on the kettle tab. The temperatures are useful because you can not only use them for making the perfect coffee (80-90C) but you’ll find other uses like warming plates before dinner, heating up a baby’s bottle or using the lower temperatures for cleaning.

The Cavaletto kettle has a capacity to boil up to 7 cups of water at a time and also has a 3 year guarantee to give assurance that it will last. The attention to detail on the silver trim sets off the Italian look nicely with the perfect pour spout. There’s also a filter inside for those of us who live in a hard water area but the workings don’t matter as it looks, and feels so stylish to use.  It’s a great looking bit of kit for the kitchen too!

Dobble Giant and Piles Board Games

The summer holidays are fast approaching, and like many parents, I’ve already started thinking about how to keep the children entertained whilst they’re off school. Asmodee kindly sent us a couple of great games – Dobble Giant and PILES! – and I can already tell that both games are going to be a firm favourites this summer.

We’re big fans of the original Dobble, and the giant version brings a whole new level of fun to the game. Each oversized card features five symbols, and there’s always one (and only one!) matching symbol on any two cards. The aim is simple – spot the pair faster than anyone else!

The big difference with this version of Dobble is that it’s designed for outdoor play, with oversized cards placed on the ground for players to run between as they spot the matching symbols. So not only are they using their brains, they’re burning off plenty of energy too! It’s a brilliant way to make the most of sunny days, but if the weather turns, it works just as well indoors.

With four different games to play with the cards, it should keep them busy for a good while!

Relay Race
4–12 players (with a 2-player variant), this fast-paced game involves two rows of 10 cards laid on the ground. Players race down the row by naming the matching symbol between each card they step on. At the end, they high five a teammate who races back—the first team to finish wins!

The Cat
3–8 players. Played with a 4×5 grid of cards face up on the ground. One player is the Cat and starts on a corner; others choose their own starting card. Everyone moves simultaneously by finding a matching symbol on an adjacent card -avoid the Cat or you’re out, and the last player remaining wins.

The Circle
2–10 players. Place all 20 cards in a circle on the ground and space players out evenly. Everyone races clockwise, finding and calling out matching symbols on the next card before moving. If one player catches another, the slower one is out – last player left wins.

Face-Off
5–11 players. One player acts as referee while the rest split into two equal teams and assign secret numbers starting from 1. The referee flips two cards and calls a number, those players race to find the matching symbol. Whoever finds it first wins both cards for their team, and the team with the most at the end wins.

Each game takes just 10–15 minutes and we have found them to be just as much fun for children and adults. There’s also no need to simplify the game for younger children, in fact ours were often quicker than the grown-ups! The cards are colourful, durable, and a decent size although I wouldn’t recommend using them on wet grass if you want them to last. Whether you’re planning a family picnic, garden playdate, or just want to get the children outdoors for some fresh air, Dobble Giant is a great way to keep the children entertained this summer.

If your family loves fast, frantic games, then Piles! is one to pop straight on your summer games list. It’s a high-speed, all-play-at-once card game so there’s no waiting around for turns. Just be warned: when older children and competitive adults get stuck in, things can get very chaotic!

The aim of the game is to be the first to collect six matching piles of clothing. Sounds simple? Well, some of the items are cleverly designed to look similar and catch you out—so you need to stay sharp! Everyone sits in a circle with six piles of four cards laid out in front of them, and four cards face down in the centre. You’re only allowed to use one pile at a time, swapping one card at a time, and the piles you’re not holding must stay face down until it’s complete. It’s quick, clever, and incredibly frantic as everyone races to build their matching sets at once.

Games take about 10 minutes, so it’s perfect for quick bursts of fun or back-to-back rounds. Since launching last October, Piles! has already sold over 50,000 copies and it’s easy to see why. It’s gone viral online, and once you’ve played a round or two, you’ll be hooked.

Whether you’re indoors on a rainy afternoon or outdoors in the sunshine, Piles! guarantees plenty of fun but don’tt expect a quiet game because it will gets loud and chaotic and that’s exactly what makes it so much fun to play!

Sonic Pro Super Sonic Electric Toothbrush

Disclaimer – We have received this item for free or on a loan basis for the purpose of this review/feature but all words and opinions are our own.

You could get Dad another pair of socks for Father’s Day, but why not buy him a new electric toothbrush that he’s actually going to use?

Spotlight Oral Care have brought out a state-of-the-art toothbrush that is also a tongue cleaner and has 4 modes for cleaning teeth; Gentle, Clean, White and Polish.  Setting up the toothbrush is easy too because the pack contains 3 brush heads and the whole kit fits into a neat travel case. There’s also a cable and magnetic click charger included so that you can charge the toothbrush on the go, and then plug in the charger to use as a battery.

The power button acts as a mode selector, so you can just press and go, with the lights below the brush head showing you 2 minutes on the automatic timer.  I particularly like changing the settings; when you press the Power button it remembers the last setting you used and times 2 minutes from there. If you press the Power button again, it changes to the next mode setting, but also give off a different tone. This is so that when you’re brushing and needing to change setting (or accidentally change setting as I do!) you can hear the difference rather than having to take the toothbrush away from your mouth to see!

The modes differ in terms of how many reps per minute they generate. The Gentle mode is probably good for children and those who have sensitive gums and teeth (30,000 reps) then Clean Mode has 40,000 which White Mode is more at 45,000. Polish Mode has 50,000 reps per minute to give a pearly white smile!

The brush is very lightweight despite having a power pack included, and it’s incredibly quiet.  The brush heads are soft bristle and the back of the brush head has the tongue cleaner so you can just flip the toothbrush over and use it whilst in a cleaning mode, or without there being a setting on if you want to be more gentle. The pressure sensor helps protect gums from being brushed too harshly and possibly receding.

Electric toothbrushes have come a long way in the last decade, and the Spotlight Oral Care Sonic Pro toothbrush is no exception.  The ability to take it with you on holiday and charge anywhere is a big bonus too. The toothbrush cleans, polishes and whitens brilliantly and it’s easy to use. What’s Dad got to complain about?

Prezzee Gift Card for Easter

Disclaimer – We have received this item for free or on a loan basis for the purpose of this review/feature but all words and opinions are our own.

We don’t give paper gift cards any longer, no do we tend to give the plastic cards. Today, the most tech savvy people give money using apps. Prezzee is an online app which can be accessed from your phone and even added to your supermarket app so that you have them all in the same place.

We were sent a link to a Prezzee gift card for Marks & Spencer.  The link was emailed, and by clicking on it, you either open an app on your phone or it takes you to a website. If you already have an account (as I do) then you simply log in and the link applies the gift card amount straight to your Prezzee app. If you don’t have the app, then the link takes you to a website to download the app, which is needed in order to use any of the Prezzee gift cards.

The Prezzee gift cards also need an app or website in order to send them. You can send £5-£500 worth of vouchers securely for stores such as Currys, Argos, B&M, ASK Restaurants, Café Rouge, Boots, Boohoo and more. The emails can be personalised to be specific to a birthday, anniversary and of course, as an alternative to chocolate at Easter!

Using the card at the specific store is easy. Using the app, treat the barcode as a normal gift card and it can be scanned by the cashier or at the self-serve. The code is also able to be used online when making purchases too.

The future is in technology, and Prezzee Gift Cards help save time and money with the app and sending money instantly. No more losing gift cards at the back of a drawer or worrying they will go out of date!

The Royal Horseguards Hotel Afternoon Tea

NOT SPONSORED

2 Whitehall Court London SW1A 2EJ

Afternoon tea is a pleasure best enjoyed whilst stopping off during a walking tour of London. The Royal Horseguards Hotel is just off of Whitehall (think Downing Street and the Houses of Parliament) on a quiet side road en-route to Charing Cross. The impressive hotel has a grand entrance into the reception, but the restaurant entrance takes you straight to afternoon tea, 1pm to 4pm every day.

We started on the Classic Afternoon Tea with a glass of Chapel Down sparkling wine and choosing our tea from the menu. You can have a coffee instead, but I prefer a proper pot of English Breakfast, and the server gave me an extra large pot but you can request as many refills of your tea as you like, as long as you stick to the same tea. Coffee is different; choose whichever iteration of coffee you please and there’s no limit there.

Our afternoon tea stand was brought over to us with the usual selection of 3 courses; sandwiches, scones and cakes. The sandwiches were smoked salmon, cucumber and cream cheese, egg mayo and ham and English mustard. The scones were two plain and two sultana scones with cream and strawberry jam.  On the top plate we had the cakes! Chocolate éclair, mini Victoria sponge, lemon meringue pie and a gin and lime pebble on shortbread biscuit.  At this point, I couldn’t eat many of the cakes having eaten my share of the sandwiches and scones but the staff very kindly bring boxes and a bag to take home your left-over afternoon tea, which adds to the service.

Speaking of which, the staff went above and beyond to serve every table; filling up tea and wine glasses (wine is an extra cost on this tea) and taking photos. The restaurant was almost full all afternoon with some people spilling over into the Equus Bar or admiring the glorious reception area where you can sit and ponder for a while before taking in the rest of Whitehall.

Glasshouse at the NYX Hotel, Southampton Row, London

Disclaimer – We were sponsored for this visit but all thoughts and views are our own.

In the heart of Holborn, amongst the offices, sandwich shops and on the edge of the West End, the NYX Hotel sits on the edge of Southampton Row and Theobalds Road.  The hotel, which is part of the Leonardo Hotels group, has converted the top floor to the Glasshouse Bar.  With views across London looking north to south, the rooftop bar has some wicked cocktails to match.  We went to visit over the weekend (the Glasshouse is currently only open at weekends for the winter) and tried out the cocktails, and the views!

The entrance to the hotel is actually on Old Gloucester Street, then the bar is on the 9th floor.  The ‘L’ shaped bar is on the corner of the building, with floor to ceiling windows all around.  The views are breath taking with the Oxo Tower, London Eye and Big Ben visible in a glance.  In summer, the windows open so that you not only get to bask in the summer heat, but see the view clearly.  Whilst we were there, the windows were opened for us, and immediately the rest of the clients in the bar came over to both see the views and take lots of photos.  There’s so much to see from this vantage point, it must be even better in the summer.  There are also glass ceilings which open up to show the stars at night and provide another backdrop for photos.

The bar has an array of well known cocktails and then a list of their own.  My colleague and I had a Cosmopolitan, then Mint Hint (Sapphire Gin) followed by a Caramel Pop and then I had a Sweet Escape – one of the mocktails on the menu.  You can also order wine and flatbreads, all of which are in the extensive menu.  We sat on comfy chairs around intimate low level tables but there are high bar stools at the windows to look out over the view, a corner sofa at the far end of the room and small tables dotted around.  The cocktails were delicious! It’s difficult to make a good Cosmopolitan but the bar staff nailed it.

The Glasshouse is a fantastic way of viewing London from the rooftop, with some brilliant cocktails and a setting that makes it ideal for after work, after dinner or even apres theatre!

Pros

Breath taking views

Lovely cocktails

Cons

You have to enter the hotel via Old Gloucester Street, not Southampton Row

Rules Restaurant, Maiden Lane London WC2E 7LB

This visit was not paid for by a third party and was conducted without the knowledge of the restaurant.

It’s no mean feat being the oldest restaurant in London but Rules on Maiden Lane, Covent Garden, has survived over 200 years and even stayed open during World War Two, although only for a couple of hours and rationed portions.  The dwellers of West London could still consume unlimited amounts of rabbit, pheasant and grouse though as these were not rationed.

Rules caters for quintessential British cuisine with the aforementioned pheasant and grouse available still (and occasionally rabbit) depending on the season.  The theatre of the restaurant lies in the atmosphere and formidable history of the premises which has never moved since gaining foothold in 1798.

The lavish premises lies on a side road close to the main Covent Garden Market but has become pedestrian only since Lockdown.  Entering the door, the original roaring fireplace greets you second after the maître’d has locked eyes with you. It’s not often that you have fireplaces in restaurants anymore but then there aren’t many places to eat like Rules.  The seating area is arranged in tables and booths with the walls covered in London and Thames memorabilia, a history of the establishment lives above the diners in the form of plaques, photos, cartoons and artwork.  Upstairs there is a more secluded bar and just before Lockdown, The Winter Garden Cocktail Bar opened.

Along with cocktails and vast cellar of wines, the food is the most notable aspect. Presented on an oversized menu, there are everyday items such as their famous Rock Oysters and Dorset Crab, as well as London favourites such as Steak and Kidney Pie.  The menu changes with the season though, so don’t be surprised to find pigeon, grouse, pheasant and duck on the menu along with an array of different fishes. You won’t find chicken on the menu very often though, unless it’s the integral part of Rules’ famous Chicken, Leek and Mushroom Pie.

It’s impossible not to enjoy the authenticity of Rules, in both the food and the décor.  The food is very well cooked and served without garnish or drama but all of the original flavour is retained, enhanced by British-grown produce and often reminiscent of Granny’s handed-down recipe.  It wouldn’t surprise me if every single one of the dishes came about after past patrons passed on the family secrets to each of Rules’ head chefs and the finished product is today’s modern day menu.

If you’re not familiar with game, then I can recommend the pheasant.  On our visit, it was a special of the day with roast potatoes, onion, carrot and Yorkshire Pudding. Guests can also enjoy Roast Mallard, Daube of Venison and even sharing dishes such as Roast Rib of Beef for two. Of course, the traditional Salt-Aged Sirloin Steak is also there to tempt you when nothing else will do.

Desserts at Rules are just as exemplary as their game with British favourites such as Rules Sticky Toffee Pudding, Rules Golden Syrup Sponge and Bread & Butter Pudding. The dessert portions are ample and come with custard or ice cream but for the more adventurous, there are delights such as Chocolate Moelleux with Caramel Ice Cream and Honeycomb or Welsh Rarebit on Sourdough Toast.  There’s Cropwell Blue Stilton or Cheese Plate to sample as well, with their famous silver biscuit box filled with Digestive Biscuits.

Pros

  • Beautiful surroundings and exemplary service
  • Excellent, traditional food
  • The Winter Garden Cocktail Bar is an added bonus for before or after eating

Cons

  • Seasonal menu, a lot of British game on the menu so some dishes won’t suit everyone

Afternoon Tea Week at Dalchini, Wimbledon

Disclaimer – We received this item free for the purpose of this review/feature but all words and opinions are our own.

Not only is it Afternoon Tea Week (12-18 August) but Dalchini in Wimbledon is 25 years old this year and starting their anniversary celebrations! We visited this week to sample their new Indo-Chinese afternoon tea, and to see the beginning of the preparations for their anniversary year including their new Speakeasy which opened in May.

Dalchini (meaning cinnamon) opened in 2000 in its present location at 174 Arthur Road, Wimbledon, right opposite Wimbledon South on the District Line. Inside, the spacious restaurant is open 364 days a year with air conditioning.  We were seated by the large opening windows at the front of the premises – ideal for people watching!  The afternoon tea (£17.95 each or £34.95 for two) includes a choice of two sandwiches from a choice of 4 fillings, a choice between Crispy Chilli Garlic Paneer or Sesame Prawn Toast, Aloo Mutter Samosas, raisin and cheese scones with jam and cream and a selection of cakes and muffins including Chocolate Brownies, Fruit Tea Cake and Chocolate Muffins. The photos show the complete selection on the menu as a special taster but this was way too much for us, so the choice between the different sandwich fillings and savoury snacks is welcome.

The sandwiches are a mixture of vegetarian (Mediterranean vegetables and cheese & cucumber) and two types of chicken (pepper chicken and honey mustard chicken) use the Indo-Chinese spices to add delicious flavour that you simply can’t make at home!  We loved the prawn toasts too, which come with chilli sauce and like all the food on the Afternoon Tea, is made completely in house. In fact, even the bread is baked in house!  The samosas and paneer pieces are also fabulous, with a mint or tamarind chutney to accompany.

The two different types of scone (Cheddar cheese and raisin scones) are also freshly baked and you can really taste the freshness.  There’s strawberry jam and cream with them too. Finally, there are so many cakes it’s hard to keep up! The cakes are baked in house and include a chocolate brownie, dry fruit tea cake and vanilla and chocolate muffins. My favourite was probably the dry fruit tea cake which was full of almonds, nuts and dried fruits like raisins and currants.  There’s an impressive list of teas as well, where we opted for the traditional Flavoured Black Tea which is similar to English Breakfast, or the refreshing Fruit Tea called Granny’s Garden – made with fresh summer fruits and infused in a teapot to keep the flavour.

Along with the restaurant upstairs, there’s a new Speakeasy situated downstairs via a secret door too! Seating 40, the underground bar serves their own take on traditional cocktails and has their own beer on tap, along with Cobra and usual spirits. There’s a long table as well as a snug and it’s all air conditioned. Perfectly timed to help celebrate their 25th anniversary and in the run up to Christmas.

Dalchini of Wimbledon add that something different to your Afternoon Tea this week, and with the celebrations coming up for their anniversary, you can be sure there will be more yummy surprises coming up!

Savyll Non-Alcoholic Cocktails

Disclaimer – We received this item free for the purpose of this review/feature but all words and opinions are our own.

Bring on summer! Well, even if summer never falls upon us (it’s looking that way!) you can still enjoy these mocktails from Savyll which launched recently.

The cans of non-alcoholic cocktails in flavours Mojito, Bellini, Paloma and Moscow Mule have won the 2022 Great Taste Award for their taste. We were sent a selection of each flavour to try and thanks to their very low ABV, we enjoyed these over lunch!

The name Savyll came from the phrase, “To be savoured by all” and with these drinks being non-alcoholic, it means everyone can enjoy them.  The cocktails, which come in 250ml can size are each made of all natural ingredients, are vegan friendly, gluten free and have less than 5 grams of sugar per 100ml. Kept fresh in the cans, the drinks are all fizzy and faithful to the cocktail names they bear with the Bellini being my favourite.  Each of the drinks has the flavour and effervescence but none of the hangover the next morning – not that you would notice because each of them has that ‘kick’ that makes them a cocktail.

The Savyll cocktails make great accompaniments to picnics and days out, or for anyone who isn’t sure about a cocktail but still wants to enjoy the flavour.  They are a completely different alternative to the soft drinks on the market, which feel more grown-up, and look like alcoholic treats as well so you won’t feel left out. I felt that the flavours weren’t over powering like some mocktails are, and they had the carbonated factor which made them easier and more fun to drink.  They contain less than 0.5% ABV so are classed as non-alcoholic but have a very small trace which might be important to some people who want to avoid alcohol completely.

This summer, Savyll’s cocktails are there to help you celebrate, enjoy and savour the taste of good beverages and all without the alcohol.

Available from £8 for the selection pack: https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/savyll-beverage-co-non-alcoholic-cocktails-4x25cl

Orchard Toys Dinosaur Dig

Disclaimer: We received this product free of charge for the purpose of this review and all thoughts and opinions are our own.

I love Orchard Toys games and puzzles, the bright attractive boxes, chunky pieces (perfect for little hands to hold) and easy to play games are not only great fun but educational too.

Our mini reviewers are obsessed with dinosaurs so have really enjoyed playing Dinosaur Dig this week. The aim of the game is to find all the bones to build a 3D dinosaur – players take turns to dig in the mud for the dinosaur bones, there’s even cardboard pickaxes to help you pull the bones out. If the colour on the bone matches the colour of your pickaxe it is added to your dinosaur body. If it doesn’t match, it goes back in the mud. The other players need to pay attention and remember where the bones are so they can select their bone when it’s their turn. It sounds easy but there are 4 Terrible T-Rex cards in there too and if you find one of these you must return one of your bones to the mud. The winner is the first player to complete their dinosaur.

The children really enjoyed digging the dinosaur bones out of the mud and as well as being great fun this game also helps them develop both their matching and memory skills and fine motor skills. The bones can be placed in any of the slots so the game can be played again and again. Like all Orchard Toys games the pieces are nice and sturdy and will provide hours of fun for dinosaur fansboth young and old this Christmas.

Grangers Down Care Kit and Cherry Blossom Sneaker Shield

Disclaimer – We received this item free for the purpose of this review/feature but all words and opinions are our own.

It’s officially winter, and that’s probably not the best time of year for me take up running but that’s what I’ve done.  With some new (and very expensive) running shoes, I’ve gone on Park Run a couple of times. Each time it was pouring with rain, which isn’t helpful when you don’t know the course yet.

Cherry Blossom have the Ultimate Protection in the form of the Cherry Blossom Sneaker Shield.  This spray not only shields trainers from rain but from stains too, which is helpful when you find you’re running through muddy fields as well as a muddy woodland.  I was sent some to try along with the Down Care Kit.

The 200ml Cherry Blossom Sneaker Shield spray can be used on all materials including canvas, synthetic materials, leather, suede and nubuck.  It’s best to spray your trainers before you wear them if they’re brand new, otherwise the Cherry Blossom Sneaker Cleaner Kit is ideal for cleaning up your shoes before applying the spray. After shaking the can, spray onto the trainers from roughly 10-15 centimetres away (4-5 inches) and allow to dry. You can apply another layer after an hour or so, depending on how worn your trainers are and how porous they have become. It’s best to leave the spray to dry on the trainers for at least a few hours, but I left them in a warm place overnight before I used them.

The spray left the shoes slightly shiny but well protected. Even the laces were waterproofed! With the two layers of protector spray on them it was time to test the shoes whilst out running.  I think the two layers helped because I was running through some long, very wet and frosty grass at places and found that the trainers not only stayed dry but the dew collected on the uppers and didn’t affect my feet underneath. My socks stayed toasty dry! This has spurred me on to try the Cherry Blossom on other trainers and shoes like the garden shoes I use for pottering around, and my Sketchers.

The Grangers Down Care Kit is a powerful cleaning agent for your down insulated clothing, namely duvet coats and puffer jackets. I have a Regata jacket that I wear obsessively throughout the winter but I’m loathed to wash it because I hate how it loses its fluffiness. The Down Care Kit contains the Wash & Repel solution and 3 dryer balls to help dry your garments quicker, and to get more air into the down so that it doesn’t go flat after washing. To use, you just add 2 capfuls (100ml) of the Wash & Repel solution to the washing machine drawer where you normally put detergent. For each additional garment, add another capful but I washed just my coat on one load to give it room to spin properly.  If you’re tumble drying, add the dryer balls on a low heat to get the air circulating more. You might need to redistribute the down as it dries so that you don’t end up with all sorts of lumps and bumps. I let my coat dry outside on a clear day so that it gets some natural air to it too and make sure that all the moisture is out.

Once dry and you’re able to wear it, your garment is not only clean but is protected against rain as well. It’s not completely waterproof (depending on the material of your garment and how it’s made) but it is water repellent. It doesn’t soak in the rain as much and it’s quicker to dry if you do get wet.

The Cherry Blossom Sneaker Shield and Grangers Wash & Repel Kit are handy kits for anyone who is the outdoor type, or a stocking filler for anyone who takes part in outdoor sport. They also help make clothes and trainers last longer!

Sacla’ Christmas Gifts

Disclaimer: We received these products free of charge for the purpose of this review and all thoughts and opinions are our own.

Christmas is the time of year when most people treat themselves to luxurious food & festive drinks. You may have heard of the Italian brand Sacla’ before as they make the most amazing pesto, but did you know that they also stock an amazing selection of Italian food & drink gifts, including sweet treats, hampers and drinks.

The company was founded in 1939 by Secondo and Piera Ercole in Piedmont, Italy. The area is known as ‘Italy’s garden’ and they wanted to share their delicious produce so started preparing fruit and vegetables and selling them. The company has gone from strength to strength and is now a very successful business, bringing the real flavours of Italy to the world.

We’ve been sampling a couple of products that will make fantastic Christmas gifts for any foodie. The Villa Domiziano Prosecco DOC is nice and fresh with plenty of bubbles that jump and fizz enticingly. With subtle flavours of citrus and apple it is everything you could want in a fizz, and more.  Light, delicate and fruity it is an excellent accompaniment to Christmas lunch or Christmas drinks with friends. With an RRP of £15 it also makes a great Secret Santa gift too.

Chocolate as a Christmas present is hardly an original idea, but once you taste this magnificent Chocolate & Rum Torrone D. Barbero boozy Italian nougat you will see that chocolate from an artisan producer is a world apart from something from a supermarket or high street store. This torrone, made by family chocolatiers Barbero, is based on a family recipe that’s been passed down through the generations, each tweaking the recipe slightly. This variation is hand crafted and encased in dark chocolate with dark rum, Piedmont hazelnuts, Madagascar vanilla, honey and raisins. With plenty of filling encased in the chocolate, the bar is nice and moist and incredibly moreish. Whether you’re buying it a Christmas gift or as a treat for family over the Christmas period it is bound to be very well received.

Connetix 120 Piece Creative Pack

Disclaimer – We received this item free for the purpose of this review/feature but all words and opinions are our own.

This would have been my 5-year-old me dream toy! We had something similar in school that wasn’t magnetic but had creative pieces of coloured Perspex that fitted together and you can build endless imagination items. Connetix is aimed at children, but like all good toys, has taken on a life of its own and managed to infiltrate adult lifestyle.  If you’re a fan of Lego, then you’ll love reading about Connetix, the 21st Century version of the building blocks.

Connetix is aimed at children aged 3 and up.  We were sent a 120 piece pastel pack that includes 7 different shapes, with at least 2 shapes of each colour.  The food grade, non toxic pieces have strong magnets along each edge which allow the pieces to ‘stick’ to each other and build structures or shapes. The riveted corners make them extra safe for toddlers and children and the bevel design gives extra strength. That’s all great information for budding engineers, but what is it like to play with?

The enormous box arrived at my house by courier as it’s so heavy!  Inside, the pieces are stacked carefully and kept together by their magnets.  Thankfully there’s an Inspiration Book included in the pack so that you can make a start on what to build.  Beyond the Inspiration Book, no other instructions are needed as it’s self-explanatory even for little hands and minds. Working out how the pieces snap together with the magnets, finding the matching colours and working out the lengths of the triangle edges adds to the cognitive fun. In fact, there are so many ways in which children can learn from this game that depending on their age, they can glean a lot of learning.

The packaging boasts of encouraging hand-eye coordination, fine and gross motor skills spatial awareness as well as cognitive development. Along with personal development, children of different ages can work together to make creations which encourages teamwork, cooperation, language and lateral thinking.  The versatility of this game, which is also considered a craft or art supply item, lends itself to developing a lot of skills as well as bridging ages.  Much like Lego or any of the other free-play games and toys, you don’t’ stop playing with Connetix just because you’re past a certain age.

For example, I found myself flicking through the Inspiration Book, trying to find something which I could build as an example. Eventually, I found this turtle which is in the book and looked simple enough.  Well, even as an adult, this had its challenges! The pieces snap together but trying to decide which triangle and which edge to use to make the pieces stand up properly was difficult enough. You definitely need more than one pair of hands to keep things steady as you build and rummage for another piece, so as I was on my own at home, I had to find ingenious ways of propping up the pieces whilst I balanced the next piece to make it stable.  Using my initiative to build a 3-D structure which looked like the photo as well as colours that matched was also quite the task.  Looking through the Inspiration Book, I realised that there is a whole Connetix community out there who use the pieces to inspire, build art, teach and keep children and adults of all ages occupied!

The Connetix family of magnetic pieces isn’t confined to just children nor to building 3-D models although it is ideally suited to both.  The Inspiration Book opened my eyes to how the pieces can create patterns, pictures, types of transport (wheels etc can be bought separately) and clever structures. What about a table cloth made out entirely of Connetix pieces? Or a light shade to put in front of a bright light and shine through all the colours?  Making a bridge or a house for other toys to use and decorations such as Halloween lanterns, or a centre piece for Christmas?

My favourite idea though was the ball run inspirations. If you’ve never seen it before, the ball runs (sometimes they’re marble runs) are structures built so that a ball can run down a course which is typically fraught with little trials that the ball has to overcome. Bridges, drops, tunnels and balances provide endless sources of amusement for children especially as they build it themselves and create their own experiments. Endless fun, and full of satisfaction too. The ball run packs are available online.

Connetix is a toy which the whole family can play with and have endless imagination fun but also challenges everyone on different levels. The Inspiration Book gives you examples of what you build next, or combine packs to create mega structures. Look online at the different social media accounts to see what else everyone around the world is creating too!

Panda Optics Conquer Cycling Glasses

Disclaimer: We received this product free of charge for the purpose of this review and all thoughts and opinions are our own.

If the Tour de France has inspired you to take up cycling, then a pair of decent cycling glasses are a must. Whilst you might only think they shield your eyes from the sun, the best cycling glasses and sunglasses will do much more than that, protecting your eyes from not only the elements but insects and grit too.

Like all cycling equipment, glasses need to be durable and comfortable to wear all day and let’s face it I want them to look cool too!  I recently spent 10 days cycling in Somerset and Panda Optics Conquer Pink cycling glasses certainly ticked all these boxes for me.

Unisex and versatile, the glasses are a trendy wraparound style which offer maximum protection from sun and wind, whilst maintaining a more fashionable look than traditional wraparound sunglasses. With a semi-rimless frame and cylindrical lenses, the style is based on Panda’s bestselling “Cobalt” ski goggles.

The glasses arrived packaged in a sturdy purple box with three different lenses – Mirrored blue category 3, Amber category 2 and Clear category 0, along with a microfibre cleaning cloth and microfibre pouch.

When I put them on, they fitted nicely and the arms didn’t dig into my head or ears. The rubber nose grip is comfortable and they didn’t slide down my nose, even when I was sweating a lot on the hill climbs.

I did initially struggle to get the lenses out as I didn’t want to use too much pressure. The YouTube  video on their website was really helpful and showed me where to hold them to get the lenses out.  Just make sure you carry the microfibre cloth with you, as you do need to hold the lenses to remove them which results in lots of fingerprints!!

Whilst my husband wasn’t a fan of the pink frame, they did fit him nicely too and if like him you’re not a fan of pink the glasses are also available with blue, grey and green frames.

At £79 they’re excellent value for money and a great addition to my cycling gear. They are available from the Panda Optics website here. with free delivery with orders over £50
