Casdon Dyson Cordless Vacuum & Dyson Styling Set

Disclaimer – We have received this item for free or on a loan basis for the purpose of this review/feature but all words and opinions are our own.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always loved the idea of making a ‘grown up’ object miniature and still be able to use it.  The Dyson hairstyling set and Dyson Cordless Vacuum do just that – shrink down the real-life size to something manageable to a toddler.  Both sets actually work too, with the hairdryer from the styling set blowing air and the cordless vacuum really does have working suction!

The Dyson Styling Set contains a hairdryer, diffuser attachment, straightening nozzle, brush and comb. It’s based on the (very expensive) version of the Dyson supersonic that’s a favourite of Millennials. Each of the attachments actually work, so the brush can be used to brush a child’s hair, the diffuser and nozzle attach to the hair dryer and both can be used to ‘dry’ hair, although the air current is very weak. They are absolute miniatures of the real thing, just half the size for little hands to be able to use them! There’s even sound effects and panel lights to make it more realistic.

The Dyson Cordless Vacuum is again a miniature replica of the real thing. It comes with the main vacuum body, long nozzle attachment, and an interchangeable carpet vacuum head.  Just like the real-life thing! The whole vacuum measures 68cms in height, but it’s very lightweight for a toddler to be able to pick it up and use it. The body of the vacuum, where the dust would usually be collected, is filled with tiny coloured particles which children can take out and vacuum up again.

With both kits, there is a great deal of learning for small children, which not only includes role play and imagination play, but the dexterity of using the brush and diffuser tools, adding and removing the vacuum heads and pressing all the buttons. There’s the science behind the air currents too, and cause and effect. They’re brilliant for keeping children amused, and we won’t mention how it encourages them to help out around the house too!

Disclaimer – We have received this item for free or on a loan basis for the purpose of this review/feature but all words and opinions are our own.

Bring some timeless nostalgia to Christmas this year with The Snowman Christmas wrapping paper and gift bags!

The wrapping paper features James, the boy from the animated film, alongside The Snowman in various poses. The 4 gift wrap sheets are all the same and measure 50cms by 70cms approximately, with 4 matching gift tags.  The tags, which show James and The Snowman mid-flight, are folded in a way in which it looks like they’re suspended in air, so as you stick them to your gift, they’re lifted from the paper!

Danilo have a whole host of other wrapping paper and gift bag designs for Christmas, as well as more The Snowman merchandise including lots of greetings cards and more designs of gift bags too.

The Moon Tarot Cross Stitch Kit

Disclaimer – We have received this item for free or on a loan basis for the purpose of this review/feature but all words and opinions are our own.

If you are looking for a cracking gift for the creative person in your life or a relaxing new hobby for yourself, a cross stitch kit from Innocent Bones is a great place to start.  Modern, stylish designs combine craft with art for both beginners and more experienced sewers, offering a mindful and rewarding experience that creates an artwork you can display in your home.  There are several collections available including Folklore, Mystical and Gothic, and each collection includes a rich choice of design options enabling you to tailor the choice of kit to the personality of the recipient or even to build up a whole collection over time.

I have been enjoying creating The Moon from the Tarot collection in my free time over the past few weeks.  It’s a really simple and effective design with a modern feel to it, and I absolutely love the colour choices.  The thing about cross stitch that particularly appeals to me is that you don’t need to come to it with any particular skills or even a lot of free time.  It’s something you can just pick up and put down but it’s also a very rewarding process.  I always find that taking some time out of my busy day to sew a few lines centres me and brings a wonderful sense of calm.

Each kit contains a guide to basic cross stitching, a printed design chart to follow, cross stitch and backing fabric cut to size, and a generous amount of high-quality embroidery floss that is more than enough to complete the design.  The kit also includes all the necessary equipment for the complete beginner, including a 5 inch wooden embroidery hoop, a pair of embroidery scissors, a packet of needle threaders and the perfect size needle.  It all comes packaged in an attractive eco-friendly box that is tailor-made for gifting to someone you love.

I would give Innocent Bones’ cross stitch kits a solid five stars and would recommend them to anyone.  These high quality kits are an inspired gift idea – creative but not complicated, great value for money and you get to create something beautiful!

Build Your Own Marble Labyrinth Advent Calendar

Disclaimer – We have received this item for free or on a loan basis for the purpose of this review/feature but all words and opinions are our own.

I’ve been really looking forward to this advent calendar! As children, we loved making our own toys so this Marble Run from Build Your Own Kits.  The kit arrives in flat form, with 24 days’ worth of instructions under advent windows which children can open and use piece-by-piece to build their own marble run. The kit is made entirely of engineered cardboard and there’s no gluing, sharp objects or tools needed.  If you want to, you can build the whole kit in one go without opening the windows by using the instructions which are also included. In the interest of doing a review, that’s what I opted for, and had great fun in doing so!

The enforced cardboard pieces are easily popped out but for little fingers, there is a cardboard too.  The instructions are without words, so even smaller children can read them, but I would suggest that the age 8+ years on the box is about right, as it took me a few turns of the paper to be able to work out how some of the pieces go together.  The instructions say that it’s 3.5/5 in difficulty and I would agree. Some of the parts fit together with ease, and there are steps which are repeated so once you get the hang of it, you can just go on and do the next part.  It’s incredibly rewarding though, even if it is a bit fiddly at times. It took me about 90 minutes to put it all together non-stop on my own and that was with scratching my head for a few minutes on one part!

The Marble Run builds up in stages with square structures on levers and balances. It’s a fabulous way to learn about physics practically as you have to get the pieces fitting together correctly for the whole kit to balance and fit together. The levers at each side move the trays inside the box, which is on a frame and therefore allows the users to adjust the level of the trays to move the marble around the course.

From the start, it’s very easy to understand the instructions. Even without words, you can work out how to put the pieces together because the instructions show you which sheets of cut-outs you need, plus they pieces are numbered. Where there are multiple pieces that fit together, they are colour coded too, so you can hold up the model against the instructions and see how they fit together.  Once you have all the trays and the frame made up, the instructions tell you how to put it together, and include a box for the marbles as well! It was actually quite easy to put the frame and trays together, and once I did, it was obvious how it all worked.  The game is quite tricky because the marbles get stuck in the holes. The object of the game is to get the marble from start to finish without getting stuck, and although it’s difficult at first, it becomes compulsive to try and get the knack. There’s also some different templates to use once the game is finished so that everyone can play and no one gets bored with the same route.

The whole game is really robust, so there’s no chance of breaking it unless you use real force. I think this is a great advent calendar for older children or for parents to sit down with younger children every night and assemble together. It’s great for dexterity too – I know my grandfather would have loved this as an advent calendar because it’s such a brain teaser, plus the game at the end is a challenge for children and adults alike, especially in winter. Great way of getting children off of screens too!

I absolutely loved doing this kit, and would happily give the advent calendar as a gift or try out some of the other kits on the Build Your Own Kits website: www.buildyourownkits.com The Marble Run Advent Calendar kit is available from late September for £24.99.

Danilo Elvis, Dr Who and Disney for Christmas

Disclaimer – We have received this item for free or on a loan basis for the purpose of this review/feature but all words and opinions are our own.

Danilo are synonymous with calendars and Christmas is the perfect time to give your loved ones a themed calendar they will love. The team at Danilo sent us three which are for all the family; Elvis, Dr Who and Disney!  Each of the calendars are marketed differently for a range of ages, so if you see something you like here, search on the www.Danilo.com website and see if there’s one in a different format. They’re great stocking fillers and some of them are on sale right now!

The Disney Calendar is a family calendar for up to 5 people. Each page has a Disney cartoon theme from Dumbo to Aladdin and Lilo & Stitch.  It also comes with a page of fabulous stickers for denoting the school holidays, parents’ evening and the school play, right down to character stickers and phrases. These are great for adding to the calendars but also great for keeping the children entertained in the kitchen when you’re trying to cook or concentrate.  It’s lovely and colourful too so you can’t miss it on the wall!

Elvis fans will adore this special edition Elvis calendar in the form of an LP. It opens up from what looks like a retro LP cover to reveal the calendar which has a photo of Elvis on every month and the calendar days underneath. It even notes Elvis’ birthday on 8 January!  The photos are from his Promised Land album, released in 1975, which is the theme of the calendar. The photos are all portraits and glossy with retro details of some of them being in black and white but all of them high quality. It shows Elvis at his best, if you’re wondering about what he looks like from his final years.

Finally, the Dr Who Collector’s Edition of the BBC programme is a Dr Who fan’s dream!  It comes in a presentation envelope and opens up to reveal 12 frame-ready prints. This isn’t a calendar for making plans on, it’s a monthly collector’s calendar where you can remove the poster-like prints and save them to frame, but there is the monthly dates across the top of each page.  The posters are all themed on details around Dr Who rather than the doctors or cast themselves. They remind me of artistic album covers which would look good on a wall anywhere, so it’s great to have a calendar which you can keep for longer than a year.

Casdon DeLonghi Barista Coffee Machine

Disclaimer – We have received this item for free or on a loan basis for the purpose of this review/feature but all words and opinions are our own.

Treat your little ones this Christmas to the same kind of pick-me-up as your coffee brings you with this replica, miniature sized coffee machine! Unlike the play pretend toys of our youth, this details coffee machine toy has everything that the grown-up version has including; two thermo coffee cups (for cappucino and americano), a milk jug (for frothing), portafilter and even a chalk board for writing up the menu and prices. It even has realistic sound effects! Even the dials go round, and the lever for the coffee beans works.

All the pieces fit nicely into the back of the machine and it requires 2x AAA batteries which are not included. It looks so unbelievably realistic though, it’s a real treat to be able to play with it!  It’s designed for children aged 3 and above, but if you don’t have a coffee machine at home (we don’t) then it’s difficult for a child to work out how to make the coffee and what the different parts are for. It’s great for older children to show them how to role play with it though, and if they see you make coffee at home on a similar machine, they even know the different types of coffee that can be made!

We loved how detailed the machine is, and the addition of the noises and how all the parts fit together at the back as well as interact with the machine added to the fun.  If you combine it with a tea set or play picnic it adds to the realism. Setting up a coffee shop at home is a real treat for children too, complete with money and finger sandwiches, there’s endless hours of play here.

Bedsure Sherpa Fleece Throw Blanket

Disclaimer: We received this product free of charge for the purpose of this review but all thoughts and opinions are our own.

A cosy blanket is one of those gifts that you don’t realise you need until you receive one and then wonder how you ever managed without it! There’s nothing better than snuggling up on the sofa, watching a festive film, whilst snuggled up in a cuddly blanket. And they’re not just for the sofa – pop one on the bed and it’s perfect for keeping the chill away on those frosty winter nights.

Bedsure recently sent me one of their Sherpa Fleece Blankets which are available in four sizes – Throw/Single, Twin/Double, Queen and King. With an impressive 22 colours to choose from ranging from soft pastels like pink, cream and lilac to bolder shades like navy, black and dark grey there’s a colour to suit all tastes whether it’s for a Scandi-style living room or to add a pop of colour to a bedroom.

The Throw/Single size measures 130 x 150cm and is the perfect size for sharing on the sofa or layering over the bed. It’s also reversible, one side is silky-soft 220 GSM flannel, while the other is a wonderfully plush Sherpa fleece. It’s incredibly warm but surprisingly lightweight and if you’re of those people who feels the cold easily then you definitely need one of these blankets on your Christmas list this year! Although summer might not seem the perfect time to test a blanket, I took mine on a caravan trip and was very glad I did. It was perfect for wrapping myself in when we were sat outside chatting with friends and it kept me lovely and snug when the temperature dropped.

The blanket is machine washable between 30°C and 60f°C, although 40°C is recommended to keep it in top condition. You can also tumble dry it on a low heat, which helps maintain its softness after washing.

Some people are more difficult to buy for than others, but this year I’ll have them covered – quite literally – with a Bedsure Sherpa Fleece Blanket. It’s the kind of present that’s practical and indulgent and I can already picture them curled up in it on Boxing Day, cup of tea in hand, feeling toasty and very pleased with their gift.

Levitex Anywhere Travel Pillow

Disclaimer – We have received this item for free or on a loan basis for the purpose of this review/feature but all words and opinions are our own.

For the traveller, taking some home comforts with you on your journey is the perfect remedy to long distance flights or uncomfortable car rides. Levitex, the sleep posture experts, have a travel sized pillow in their customary design which can be taken on a plane as hand luggage or packed away.

Measuring approximately 30cms by 35cms when inflated, the pillow comes in 4 sizes (S-XL) and the website details how you work out what size is needed depending on your height and your sleeping position. The Levitex Anywhere Travel Pillow also differs from other pillows because it is completely compressible and can deflate into a roll, secured with the enclosed strap so that you can take it with you in a rucksack or hand luggage.

To inflate the pillow to the correct pressure, you use the valve to allow air in to maximum size. Then, by literally punching the pillow with your fist to a depth of about 1cm, allow some of the air to escape then close up the valve. The firmness of the foam in the pillow give your head and neck the support needed to compose a good sleep posture to be able to sleep anywhere, and as it’s individualised to you in both pillow size and the firmness of the inflation, you can adapt it subtly to give you an even better sleep.

No more carrying bulky neck pillows at the airport and having nowhere to store them!  Levitex Anywhere Travel Pillow is also great for keeping in the car on long journeys or for children needing a pillow to travel. It also comes in a drawstring bag to protect it but allows you to keep it packed in between journeys.

Available online from £65 at: https://levitex.co.uk/products/anywhere-travel-pillow

Levitex Sleep Posture Pillow

Disclaimer – We have received this item for free or on a loan basis for the purpose of this review/feature but all words and opinions are our own.

Most of us complain about bad sleep but we rarely do anything about it, just accepting that it’s part of life.  Levitex however, have designed a sleep posture pillow that combats some of the causes of sleepless nights including the aches and pains associated with bad posture when sleeping.

I was asked to have an online consultation with founder James Leinhardt; a sleep posture expert with 15 years experience in working with patients who have complex neurological conditions. He explains that after seeing people lying in beds following operations, accidents and neurological complications, he could see why they weren’t sleeping well and waking with more pain than they should. It was all down to their sleep posture.

James started by explaining his background then asking questions about my sleep. How long does it take me to get to sleep? Did I wake up with aches and pains? Where were they?  What position do I sleep in and what position was I in when I woke up?  After gauging some background and no doubt looking at my posture as I spoke to him on the laptop (yes, I was hunched over and we spoke about that too!) James suggested that I try the Levitex Sleep Posture Pillow in the 8cm (small) size.  This, along with sleeping with another pillow under my knees as I’m a back sleeper, would help my back relax and give a better posture when sleeping.

The Levitex Sleep Posture Pillow arrived in beautiful presentation box with some information from James about the company and how to use the pillow. It looks different to my usual fluffy feather-filled pillows because it’s made of foam and therefore has a more defined shape.  It’s only 8cm high too, which is far smaller than my usual height of pillows but this was the purpose of the consultation – to find out if I was supported enough when I slept.

The Levitex pillow is a bit smaller than your usual pillow case size but it still fits so your bed aesthetics are safe!  I tried out the pillow for a nap first of all because it was obvious that a change in sleep posture was going to be a jolt.  Firstly, the height took a while to get used to. Having half the height of my normal pillows meant I had to completely change the way I sleep, but that is the point.  I also had to get used to sleeping on foam which has a different texture and a slight scent to it which takes a while to fade.

After a trial nap, I then tried sleeping with it on the bed.  Again, a full night takes a while to get used to the change in posture. As I sleep on my back, I had to adjust where the pillow meets the back of my neck to get the optimum angle to be able to sleep comfortably.  It probably took one night of waking and adjusting the position before I could comfortably say that I was in the right place to be able to sleep and have my body relax into the posture needed.

In the morning, it was a gradual wake up and wiggle of the toes to find that my shoulders were more relaxed and refreshed. I also noticed that my face wasn’t as puffy as sometimes, presumably because the pillow allowed for better lymphatic drainage from my face. Over time and with the adjustments James suggested to my sleep positions, I’m hoping I will be able to continue the good nights’ sleep even more!

Brainbox Games

Disclaimer: We received these products free of charge for the purpose of this review and all thoughts and opinions are our own.

We’re two weeks into the school holidays, and so far the weather’s been, well… uncooperative. Grey skies and drizzle have meant we’ve been spending more time indoors than we’d like, which in turn means the board games have come out in earnest. Finding a game that holds the attention of little ones and keeps older children (and to be honest, adults too) entertained can be a bit of a challenge so we were really pleased when BrainBox sent us a couple of their games to play – Maths, The World and the pocket-sized Space version and I’m pleased to report that they’ve all gone down a treat – even the Maths!!

With a RRP of £13.99 RRP, these games are a brilliant blend of fun and learning – just don’t tell the children about the learning part! They’re simple to learn, engaging enough to keep everyone involved, and with a wide range of themes you can easily find one that matches your family’s interests.

Each BrainBox game includes 55 colourful cards, a ten-second sand timer, and an eight-sided dice. Players take turns drawing a card and studying it for ten seconds before rolling the dice to determine which question they’ll be asked from the back of the card. Get it right, you keep the card; get it wrong, it goes back into the box. After ten minutes – or longer if you want – the player with the most cards is declared the winner.

It’s not just memory that’s tested. The World edition, for example, covers 55 different countries, with questions not just about geography, but colours, objects, and flags and it’s easy to tailor the challenge to the age of the child. Even reluctant readers get swept up, our eight-year-old, who usually avoids books, especially in the holidays, happily reads the questions aloud, thrilled to uncover quirky facts about animals, landmarks, and places he’d never heard of.

The Maths game is a great confidence booster for children who might find numbers a bit daunting. It sneaks in numeracy practice without it feeling like homework, and our mini reviewers were so busy playing, they didn’t even realise they were learning.

The pocket-sized version (RRP £6.99), like the Space edition we’ve been playing, is perfect for holidays. With 25 cards and 150 questions, plus 25 conversation starters, it’s just the right size to slip into a bag or backpack. Ideal for long journeys, by car, train, or plane, it’s bound to keep little hands and minds busy while you navigate the motorway or airport.

So, if you’re looking for something to keep your children entertained, thinking, and maybe even a little bit wiser over the summer holidays, BrainBox games are a fantastic choice. Even just a quick ten-minute play before bed or in the car on a day out can help build knowledge, encourage curiosity, and with any luck, ease the back-to-school transition come September.

Who knew a little cardboard box could hold so much fun – and so many facts?

SEA LIFE Aquarium London

Disclaimer – We have received this item for free or on a loan basis for the purpose of this review/feature but all words and opinions are our own.

When it comes to summer holidays, the weather is always better the week before children break up from school, making it difficult to book things to do! The SEA LIFE Aquarium London is the safest bet yet for planning as it’s completely indoors and therefore weatherproof!

Located on the South Bank, in the old County Hall building and next to The London Eye (giant ferris wheel) there is plenty to do in the area.  Book tickets to SEA LIFE Aquarium online and you can reserve your entrance time and plan your day ahead, including transport.

The SEA LIFE Aquarium starts with the Atlantic section. There are more than 10 sections throughout the aquarium including Antarctica and Rainforests, acting as a tour around the world via aquatic life.  The aquarium follows a path where you meet fish and sea creatures in different tanks with informative digital displays that tell you the fish contained within the tank as well as information about their habitat and how endangered they are. There are all sorts of fish, star fish, lobsters and other animals to look at which the children found fascinating and there was certainly something for everybody. You can read as much or as little about the species as you like, or just watch them swim around. Photos are also possible.

As you travel round more tanks, you come to the main attraction of the underwater exhibition – a huge tank containing sharks, turtles and stingray!  There are ample windows around the tank and seating points for small children as well as adults to be able to sit and watch, or in the case of most children, to sit and point at the animals. The sharks are seriously impressive due to their size and their elegance but the turtles are huge, and look just like Crush in Finding Nemo! The stingray and turtles swim around and come up to the glass to ‘greet’ onlookers which makes for some fabulous photos. Some of the sharks swim too, but there are a couple of basking sharks at the bottom of the tank which you can see up close.

Walking around the rest of the exhibitions, there’s an area with Ben Fogel talking about the habitats of the rainforest, an area of rockpools where you can touch shark eggs and star fish and learn about their lifecycles from a member of staff. We loved hearing about how the turtles in the main display were rescued from a turtle farm and brought to London and got to see a real turtle shell, its skeleton and be able to touch it.

The displays are interspersed with different types of interactions, professional photos, a virtual reality lab and activities for children of all ages. We saw babies being carried forward facing so that they could look into the tanks and toddlers being able to watch the motion of the fish for what must have seemed like hours to them!

For both adults and children, the best display has to be the penguins. A large pool with an equally large area of hardstanding behind big glass walls houses the penguin colony who were entertaining and inquisitive. They didn’t seem to mind the number of people watching them and seemed genuinely nosy and came face-to-face with the public with no fear. We watched for ages as they did dove into the pool, swam for fun, swam for hunting and then hopped out of the water onto the ground. There’s ice being churned out all the time to keep them cool and the viewing window (a globe above ground where children can stand and watch them) was especially good fun. The children loved the antics of the penguins and how close they could get to them and we loved watching them. I could sit there for hours!

Before finishing, you go through a sea of jellyfish too, which were magical and fascinated the smaller children with their illuminous properties. The SEA LIFE Aquarium finished with a huge gift shop selling all sorts of soft toys, mugs and keyrings as well as more for the grown-ups. You can purchase the photos at this stage too before walking out to South Bank where you are right next to the London Eye and Shrek’s Adventure.

It took us about 2 hours to walk round the whole exhibition with stopping to see the fish in each display, taking photos and roughly reading the information boards. By the end of the day, we were buzzing from all the sights and sounds of the aquarium and being able to see animals and fish we would never usually get to see in London. It’s a fabulous day out!

BBox Insulating Flip Top Bottle

Disclaimer – We have received this item for free or on a loan basis for the purpose of this review/feature but all words and opinions are our own.

The insulating Flip Top Bottle from BBox is one of those items you don’t know you need until you start using it. The 690ml bottle (shown here in spearmint colour but is also available in varieties of blue, green and pink) appeals to both adults and children thanks to the colours as well as the easy of use and volume.  It has stainless steel inners with a similar stainless steel straw and a flip top spout so that it doesn’t spill. There’s a bendy carry handle too which makes it easy to fix to a backpack or carry by hand and not get broken.

I found this really easy to use. It’s easy to fil up with the screw lid coming off to reveal the stainless steel. Your water doesn’t have to touch any plastic.  I am particularly passionate about not using plastic bottles because of the damage they do to the environment, but few people know what damage plastic does to our bodies, so stainless steel is the best option.  I like the fact that the BBox Insulating Flip Top Bottle can keep drinks cold as well as hot, so it has use during both the summer and the winter.

It’s great for take out on trips, and the robust design means it can be taken to football games, put in the car (the insulating layers means it won’t get hot quick) or in a backpack for lunchtime.  The huge capacity means though, that you can stay hydrated all day on just one fill up. It can take drinks from temperatures as low as -20C right up to 120C. Tell me who wouldn’t want to use a versatile insulating bottle with those credentials?

My Little Sudocrem Aloe Vera

Disclaimer – We have received this item for free or on a loan basis for the purpose of this review/feature but all words and opinions are our own.

Sooth summer with Sudocrem’s Aloe Vera skin cream.  In the long line of My Little Sudocrem range, the ever popular Sudocrem comes with the cooling effects of Aloe Vera this summer, in the same handy-sized pot that you find all the My Little Sudocrem characters.

Sudocrem is great for dry skin, relieving itches, as a barrier cream especially when in nature, and calms redness and irritations such as rashes and eczema.  The aloe vera has added soothing properties, often used on sunburn and to help heal inflamed, burnt skin. Many people associate the smell of aloe vera with summer and holiday time, which is no wonder given its healing properties.

The My Little Sudocrem Aloe Vera is the same rich Sudocrem but with the added aloe vera you have a fresh and slightly fruity fragrance too.  I loved using this on my knees and elbows when working from home (it’s a bit rich for hands and if you use it on the face, make sure you really rub it in). It’s also great for holidays because it’s only 22 grams so it’s well under the airport limit.  I found that the Sudocrem Aloe Vera left my skin soft and hydrated with the lovely fragrance of aloe vera that lasted all day.

As far as Christmas presents go, you can’t go wrong with a Bluetooth speaker. Edifier have this new 6 watt, Bluetooth v5.4 portable speaker which almost fits in your hand. It has a 43mm driver with neodymium magnets and a 55mm bass radiator.

Enough of the tech talk though – what’s it like to use?  It’s 9.4cm x 9cm x5cm and has a USB-C charging port which comes with the relevant cable.  The controls on the top are on/off, + & – and a light feature. There’s a display of how much battery there is and it illuminates when the speaker is switched on. There’s also a microphone function light which you can see lights up when the microphone is on. The light surrounds the speaker on both sides and pressing it several times changes the light colours or to a solid white. Great for when you’re camping and need to leave a light on to find your way back or to carry with you and see where you’ve left it!

To set up, just switch on the ES20 speaker so that you hear the chime noise, then look in your Bluetooth settings on your phone or device. The ES20 speaker should be there, and you can connect immediately! The speaker actually has multipoint pairing on v5.4 which means you can connect more than one speaker at a time to your one device. There’s about 15 hours of playtime on the speaker too, although I haven’t managed to test that yet as I’ve been playing it for hours on a full charge and it hasn’t given any indication of running out of steam!

You can use the controls on the speaker or there’s the EDIFIER ConneX app which allows you to change settings as well as simple tasks like volume. For the festival goers, it’s also waterproof and dustproof and comes with a handy strap handle to carry it with.

Like most Edifier products, this is a great Christmas gift or handy for yourself when you’re camping, in the garden or for a teenager’s bedroom.

Swan 11 Litre cyclone Duo Layer Air Fryer

Disclaimer – We have received this item for free or on a loan basis for the purpose of this review/feature but all words and opinions are our own.

Air fryers have become a part of modern living and there are so many on the market nowadays. Swan have a different take on the air fryer with this huge 11 litre capacity double layer (and two drawer) air fryer as part of their range available for Christmas.

If you’re not familiar with an air fryer (where have you been?) then let me explain. Using hot air, in a smaller capacity than an oven, they heat food from the outside in at high temperatures but using a fraction of the energy of an oven. No need to heat up vast expanses of metal in a conventional oven, the air fryer starts cooking as soon as you turn it on, with no need to heat it up first.  With the ‘Cost of Living Crisis’ at the moment, many people are finding air fryers quicker and cheaper to run than conventional ovens.

The Swan 11 litre Cyclone Duo Layer Air Fryer actually replaces an old air fryer I bought a few years ago and has some added features. There are 2 drawers. That means the drawers can keep different food apart and also increases the capacity, but still cooking at the same time.  Each of the drawers has two layers, the top one having legs which you can extend so that you can get double the amount into each drawer. That’s enough size per drawer to cook a whole chicken, or enough food for up to a family of 8. We use one drawer for meat and fish and one for vegetables and snacks, which means there’s less cleaning as well as the vegetable drawer doesn’t have the fat residue that the meat drawer has, and can be cleaned quicker.

There’s 10 pre-set meal selections too. It may not be obvious first but the controls are down the right hand side of the appliance and if you remove the sticker, the pre-set selector is there, including the on/off key.  You can fold out the control panel too so that it’s facing you and is easier to see. With a bit of mastering, you can sync the cooking times in both the drawers so that they finish at the same time. So if you’re cooking a whole meal in the air fryer (which is totally possible) then you can have the air fryer time it so that they finish at the same time to serve all food hot.

I absolutely love air fried food. Meat often keeps its juiciness and vegetables keep their flavour whist still being cooked thoroughly.  We tried a Sunday Roast in the Air Fryer, seeing as there is such capacity and versatility with the different layers.  Pork belly is absolutely gorgeous, and doesn’t take as long to cook in an air fryer. The fat crisps up beautifully with the meat staying succulent too. There’s minimal extra fat needed on any foods as the air convection sears the meat and keeps the heat in.  Vegetables are also juicy. Our courgettes, which are home grown, kept their flavour and didn’t need any extra seasoning even though they were sliced. Potatoes are great roasted in the air fryer too. You can add some fat to them but even if you don’t, they give a lot of flavour and still cook thoroughly, leaving the middle fluffy!

The Swan 11 litre Cyclone Duo Layer Air Fryer has the added bonus of being more user-friendly.  If you have difficulty bending to take something hot out of the oven, the worktop-mounted air fryer is a brilliant alternative. If heavy pots are a problem, then the one-handed drawer is much easier, and lighter to manoeuvre.  The time it takes to cook food is much quicker too, so if you’re on your own, this is a life saver!

The Krafted Connex

Disclaimer – We have received this item for free or on a loan basis for the purpose of this review/feature but all words and opinions are our own.

Keep your devices connected and up-to-date with the Krafted Connex in your pocket.

The handy Connex gadget has 5 connectors in one product which can allow for high speed data transfer between phones, laptops and other devices as well as charge from one to another. Like a Swiss Army knife, the Krafted Connex folds up into the size of a packet of chewing gum to be able to be packed, in a pocket or thrown at the bottom of a bag.  It also comes in two colours; jade (like the one in the photo) and charcoal.

The Krafted Connex has a USB-C plug at one end, which comes with a USB-C to USB-A adaptor already attached. This is important because when it comes to charging or data transfer, the Connex needs to be plugged in to each device at opposite ends. So I had to remove the USB-A first, then attach my speaker to the USB-C plug on the other end in order to charge it.

All the connections are:

INPUT:

  • USB-C Connector
  • USB-A Connector (as an adaptor)

OUTPUT:

  • Lightening Connector x2
  • USBC-Connector
  • Micro USB Connector

There’s actually 8 different combinations of connections you can make with the gadget, and because it’s made of Flex Silicone rubber, it can twist in all sorts of ways to get the connection you need. It folds up nicely so that you can store it away and the keyring on it ensures you’ll always have it handy.

This is great as a Secret Santa or for the stocking of a teenager or someone travels a lot. You could also use them as gifts for clients who are always out and about – nearly everyone would find a use for them!

Filippo Berio Olive Oil Sprays

Disclaimer – We have received this item for free or on a loan basis for the purpose of this review/feature but all words and opinions are our own.

We are all familiar with olive oil for cooking nowadays, but with the advent of air fryers, the Filippo Berio Olive Oil sprays have come into their own.  There’s the Mild & Light Olive Oil Spray specifically for air fryers and Extra Virgin Olive Oil Spray for dressings and flavour.

I started with the Extra Virgin Olive Oil spray (green bottle) when frying bacon.  I usually pour the olive oil into the frying pan but this time I sprayed it. The spray is fan-shaped so you can spray it across a pan easily rather than a round, radial spray that’s really direct. It sprays really nicely with not too much olive oil and very evenly.  It was easy to get the olive oil up to temperature and then add more to the pan whenever I needed to. Surprisingly, it was easy to clean as well because the spray is so light, it doesn’t coat the surrounding surfaces as much as poured fat, and it came away from the frying pan easily after the bacon had cooked.

I then used the Mild & Light In Colour Filippo Berio Olive Oil Spray in the air fryer. If you’ve never used an air fryer before, you just add food to the tray and some oil to help cook and colour it, but pouring oil is useless unless you really need to coat the food. The light olive spray is all that’s needed for air fryer cooking and has more uses.  I often make sweet potato crisps where you have to coat each side of each crisp before it goes in the oven and I hate coating them with a brush dipped in olive oil! There’s so much waste then too. The olive oil sprays allow you to use a tiny amount, or build up a layer depending on what you’re cooking.

I really enjoyed trying out different food and cooking techniques using the Filippo Berio Olive Oil Sprays and I don’t think I’ve ever used them before, but will look out for them now, especially when I’m cooking in the air fryer.

Swan 20 litre Nordic Digital Microwave

Disclaimer – We have received this item for free or on a loan basis for the purpose of this review/feature but all words and opinions are our own.

Kitchen appliance company Swan have the slogan ‘Designed for Life’ and that’s exactly what this Nordic Digital Microwave is for.  With a stylish, modern aesthetic, the handle is in Scandi-style wood and the design is very sleek with a turn-dial for the timer and limited buttons for the settings. It’s not very heavy either, so this is great for a student moving in and out of digs, or for someone with limited dexterity who can’t press buttons easily.

Straight out of the box, the microwave has a glass turntable which needs setting up, but it can be plugged in and used straight away. There are instructions of course, but it doesn’t need many as we all know how a microwave works now and Swan have their displays down to a ‘T’!  I set the clock (without instructions, it was that easy) and then you press microwave and turn the dial to see the time set. There are settings too for vegetables, reheat, fish, meat and pasta among others, when you use the Auto Cooking feature. There’s also a defrost feature and this is a 800w microwave, which is important when reading recipes!

The inside of the microwave is white and easy to clean, with the removeable turntable and clean surfaces plus an interior LED light.  If you’re not familiar with a 20 litre capacity, it is about the size of a dinner plate, so for anyone living alone, this is the prefect capacity size. This model colour is oatmeal in colour but it also comes in white, blue, grey and green. Swan give you a 2 year guarantee on top too.

The Swan 20 litre Nordic Digital Microwave is part of the Nordic set which also includes a kettle, toasters, slow cooker and storage jars. I’ve loved using it this week, and find the controls really easy, especially with a busy life and no time to learn a new How To book. It fits in with my kitchen too!

Jade & Joy Collagen Protein Bars

Disclaimer – We have received this item for free or on a loan basis for the purpose of this review/feature but all words and opinions are our own.

We always seem to be hungry at The Review Studio, so when Jade & Joy sent us these chocolate bars, we decided to tuck in and enjoy the vast selection of bars they sent us.

Collagen is needed for skin, hair and nail growth and is often credited for keeping skin in good condition.  As we get older, we lose collagen in the skin and don’t make as much of it so taking a supplement has its benefits. Jade & Joy have a range of different chocolate bars which contain collagen as well as other added vitamins and minerals. I was amazed at the range of flavours the bars were, from Salted Caramel to Cookie Crumb, Caramel Blondie and Marshmallow biscuit. They don’t taste like ‘health’ bars at all because they’re mostly chocolate and still have the sweet taste to them, with no bitterness like some alternative products have.

Jade & Joy were also kind enough to send us a selection of the plant based Yubi Bars in a Variety Pack which also includes some Christmas seasonal flavours.  Great for stockings, Secret Santa as well as a daily snack, there are flavours such as Yule Log, Gingerbread and Choc Orange.  All of them contain 10 grams of protein, 99 calories and 0.3 grams of sugar. These bars are pocket sized for snacks after school but as they’re high in protein, they’re also great for after the gym. The festive flavours are fabulous though, with gooey centres. The Mint Choc bar was probably my favourite but all of them were yummy with a few quiet minutes in the afternoon.

Various boxes available online from £21 at: https://jadeandjoy.co.uk/vegan-collagen/vegan-collagen-selection-box/

Helly Hansen Scout Duffel and Scout Wash Bag

Disclaimer: We received these products free of charge for the purpose of this review and all thoughts and opinions are our own.

Whether you’re camping in the Yorkshire Dales, catching a flight to somewhere hot and sunny or heading to a cosy countryside hotel, there are two pieces of kit every traveller needs  and they are  a decent wash bag and a sturdy holdall.

Over the years I’ve owned plenty and the quality really does vary from brand to brand. Broken zips, flimsy fabric that doesn’t stand up to wear and tear, and wash bags that fail to contain leaks – I’ve seen (and cleaned up) the lot. So, when Helly Hansen got in touch and asked if we’d like to test out their Scout Duffel and Scout Wash Bag, I was more than happy to put them through their paces.

A wash bag might not be the most glamorous piece of travel gear, but it’s one of the most useful – and one of the most abused. It needs to be strong, practical, and large enough to carry all the essentials and the Helly Hansen Scout Wash Bag (RRP £25) impressed me straight away. It’s made from tough 600D polyester with a water-resistant TPU membrane and is ideal for keeping the inevitable shampoo or shower gel leaks contained and away from the rest of your luggage.

Inside, there’s one spacious main compartment, plus a mesh ventilation pocket for smaller items like lip balm or toothbrushes. The hanging loop is sturdy and ideal for use in campsite toilet blocks where surfaces can be few and far between. It’s deep enough to stand travel-sized bottles upright and even fits a few full-sized products without becoming bulky. The only thing I’d add is another mesh pocket for a bit more internal organisation, but all in all, it’s a robust, functional wash bag that is made to last.

Now, on to the Scout Duffel. This one comes in four sizes – 30L, 50L, 70L, and 90L – so there’s one for every kind of trip, from overnight stays to longer adventures. We tested the 30L version and found it to be the perfect size for weekends away. It’s got a wide, U-shaped zip opening that makes packing and unpacking nice and easy and even when empty, the bag will hold its shape, which makes organising your things that little bit easier. A handy separate zipped compartment at one end is great for shoes or dirty laundry, and if you want to keep your hands free, padded shoulder straps are tucked away in the top lid so you can wear it as a backpack.

Like the wash bag, it’s made from tough 600D nylon with a TPU coating for water resistance – handy when you’re navigating train stations in the rain or hauling your bag across a muddy field. There’s also a lockable zip on the main compartment, offering that extra bit of security if your bag’s going in the hold or overhead rack.

Both the Scout Wash Bag and Duffel come in a range of colours – Rain Blue, Purple Clay, Alpine Frost, and classic Black so there’s something to suit every taste.

In short, these two bits of kit are practical, well-designed, and built to withstand the demands of regular travel. Whether you’re a camper, a weekender, or a frequent flyer, the Scout range from Helly Hansen is well worth a look.

Peppersmith Taster Box featuring Gum, Mints and Pastilles

Disclaimer – We have received this item for free or on a loan basis for the purpose of this review/feature but all words and opinions are our own.

We can’t make up our minds whether this is a stocking filler, Secret Santa, gift for teenagers or a subscription box for the whole family, but Peppersmith surprised us with this tasty variety box of gum, mints and pastilles so we thought we’d try them and find out!

Featuring two boxes of six varieties (that’s 12 boxes in all), there’s both Peppermint and Spearmint gum, Extra Strong Mints, Peppermint Mints, and Strawberry and Lemon Pastilles.  Made in Britain with the mint sourced from a Hampshire farm, all the products contain no sugar, just Xylitol which is lower in calories and approved by the Oral Health Foundation. They’re also gluten free, vegan, nut oil free and free from palm oil and the boxes are made of cardboard so there’s very little litter from them, totally recyclable.

I started with the mints, which is not something I usually eat unless it’s after a posh meal at a restaurant. The Peppermint Mints (In the green box) were very strong with a peppermint taste. I crunched mine to release the flavour which I find is the best way!  On the back of the Peppermint Mints, I then tried the Extra Strong Mints (blue packet). I think both of them are particularly strong, and I only had one of each. Each time, they left my mouth unbelievably minty fresh and the freshness lasted quite some time. There’s about 25 mints in each packet, so great for a pocket or a handbag.

The Strawberry and Lemon Pastilles aren’t what I would usually buy but they were lovely none the less. The same size as the mints, they’re round gems of flavour with the lemon variety being my favourite. As the pastilles don’t contain sugar, they don’t coat your teeth after eating them and the lemon one is especially refreshing.

Although I don’t chew gum much these days, I would only chew sugar free, so the Peppermint and Spearmint Gums were a nice change. Again, you can taste that there isn’t any sugar in them and all-natural flavours. The only downside to the gums was that the flavour and texture didn’t last that long and I found myself disposing of them after about 10 minutes. With commercial gum, I find that I can chew it for about an hour and it loses only some of its elasticity. Peppersmith’s gums had that lovely initial crunch as I bit into it, then there’s the flavour that hits you and finally the texture. It was the texture that I found particularly difficult after 10 minutes, although I don’t know how long chewing gum is meant to last – maybe 10 minutes is it’s maximum! Still, there’s plenty of pieces in the pack and there’s two packs of each flavour.

I wasn’t expecting to enjoy this Taster Box as much as I did, but I found that I was popping a mint or chewing some gum each time I sat down to work or after a meal. It could totally become addictive and a subscription in our house, especially as there are even more flavours to try that I haven’t even looked at yet!

Desire2 Smartphone Stand, Tablet Stand and Laptop Stand

Disclaimer – We have received this item for free or on a loan basis for the purpose of this review/feature but all words and opinions are our own.

Tech accessories are everywhere nowadays, but few are actually useful! Desire2 sent us this set of lightweight aluminium stands for laptops, smartphones and tablets. As I never got around to getting any of them during lockdown, it was a bit of a treat to be able to set them up and use my tech properly!

Each of the stands pack completely flat. They’re metal, but very light to carry so you can pack them to travel or even in a laptop bag. Each one has rubber footings to make them more secure and non-slip on a surface. The laptop stand can hold a computer measuring from 10-15.6 inches with 6 different level adjustments depending on what height you’re looking for. The higher levels allow you to prop up a laptop (such as a MacBook) with a camera at the top so that you’re eye-level during a call. Otherwise, the lower levels allow you to watch a video or type at a more comfortable angle.

The smartphone stand can be used for either phones or tablets, depending on their size and how you want to view them.  With a rubber foot to hold your device up from the table surface, it won’t mark a touchscreen as there are no metal corners. You can adjust the angle of the view as well as the back support to give a higher lift.  You can feel that even though the stand is lightweight, it’s incredibly anchored and doesn’t move, especially with the grips on the base. The last stand is the smaller ‘Anywhere’ model which is designed for taking anywhere. This stand is so small that it can be flattened to about 1 centimetre flat and even fits in a pocket, but it’s useful for both phones and tablets.

Each of the stands are designed for easy charging access, especially as most smartphones charge from the bottom nowadays. The smaller stands are both really stable, and the laptop stand would be too but for the lever at the back that doesn’t sit as firmly in the support as I would have liked. It collapses if you pick it up from the wrong arm as there’s no pivot in the lever and changing levels means you have to pick it up and hold the weight of the laptop to fix it into place. It works perfectly if it’s stationary but it would be more sturdy if the back support snapped into place. It still folds flat though and is still very strong.

These are great as Secret Santa items or for setting up a home office for a teenager needing accessories for their new laptop. I have so many uses for them because I always have my phone and laptop around and need some way of propping them up whilst I’m doing a million other things, so I’m very glad to have them at hand now!

Delph Sun Care SPF Sun Cream

Disclaimer: We received these products free of charge for the purpose of this review and all thoughts and opinions are our own.

A trip to the Welsh coast during the hottest week of the year was the perfect opportunity for us to put Delph sun care products to the test. With a campsite right by the beach and long coastal and mountain walks planned, I knew we were going to need plenty of sun protection.

Suncream can be pricey, especially when you need to keep reapplying throughout the day, but Delph offers a fantastic budget friendly option that doesn’t compromise on quality. Both the SPF30 and SPF50 are very reasonably priced (RRP £8.99 and £9.99 respectively), and they’re also extra water resistant making them perfect for beach days, swimming and hiking. Delph sun cream are also one of only seven brands that can be prescribed by doctors for people with medical skin conditions so they’re perfect for those with sensitive skin too.

Over the course of the week, I used both the SPF30 and SPF50, applying in the morning and topping up during the day, especially on my neck and shoulders, which are prone to burning. I also reapplied after going in the sea. Despite hours of blazing sunshine (we definitely picked the right week!), my skin didn’t burn and is now looking healthy and golden.

After a day in the sun, good after sun cream is essential and the Delph After Sun Lotion (RRP £3.99) contains soothing Aloe Vera, moisturisers, and Vitamin E to help soothe and calm your skin after being in the sun. The rich, nourishing lotion helped cool and hydrate my skin, sinking in easily and leaving it feeling soft and refreshed. It is also helping my tan last a little longer with no sign of any peeling.

With its UVA, UVB, and water resistant properties, Delph sun creams offer great all-round protection, whether you are playing on the beach, walking, sailing or just out and about in the sun. Affordable, effective, and kind to skin they are summer essentials.

Available from Delph Sun, Independant Pharmacies, Amazon and Weldricks

Catherine Lansfield Zero Twist Six Towel Bale

Disclaimer: we received this product free of charge for the purpose of this review and all thoughts and opinions are our own.

There’s something quietly satisfying about a fresh set of towels, so I was really pleased to get my hands on the Catherine Lansfield Zero Twist Towel Bale. New towels are one of those little luxuries you don’t always think to buy for yourself – but once you have them, you wonder why you ever put up with those thin, tired old ones in the first place!

The towel bale is available in ten different colours and I opted for classic navy blue as it’s a great all-rounder- stylish, practical, and ideal for a house full of boys. Navy goes with almost anything, and it’s brilliant at hiding the odd splash of mud or DIY-related grime making them perfect for dads who spend their weekends in the garden, tinkering with tools, or elbow-deep in the shed.

Now, let’s talk texture, I like my towels soft and absorbant, there’s nothing worse than a towel that looks great on display but does nothing when it comes to drying. These ones though are just right, they’re soft and cosy without being too plush, reasonably thick, and best of all, properly absorbent. They feel lovely to use and do the job well.

I’ve washed them a couple of times now on a standard 40°C cycle and they’ve come out brilliantly – no roughness, no colour fade, and no shrinkage. Just the same soft, reliable towels, ready to use again.

The bale includes two bath towels, two hand towels, and two face cloths and are ideal for giving your bathroom an instant refresh without costing the earth. The towels actually feels much more expensive than the price tag suggests.

So if you’re looking for a Father’s Day gift that’s practical with just ahint of indulgence, this set is a brilliant choice. It won’t make any noise or need charging, but it will make Dad’s mornings that little bit nicer – and really, isn’t that what it’s all about?

RRP £56 but they are currently on offer at £26.92 which is an absolute bargain.
